Hey everyone,

So I recently got inspired to start making games again (or if we're talking to completion, I guess for the first time) and after loving 999: 9 Hours, 9 Perons, 9 Doors so much, I've decided to try to make a Visual Novel game using luaverge.

Obviously doing a full one is a pretty lofty goal and I'm trying ot be smart and start simple. That being said I'm making a lot of headway (for me) and hopefully when I'm done I'll be able to release something that's both a playable demo and easily extended for others to create full Visual Novel games.

Here's a screenshot:

As you can see, the game is meant to look like a NDS title (eventually I'll make it really look like the outer boxes have texture).

For now, I'm programming it as quickly as I can (and as well as I can - still learning) and my friend Victoria is helping me out with some art. (Please note that the image on the bottom has nothing to do with the game, it's simply some other art I requested from her so that I'd have something to look at on the bottom screen.)

Let me know what you think, Vergers!

My name is Benjamin McGraw, and I approve of this games-as-art.

Does that just mean you let me post a picture? Or were you saying you approve of what I'm doing?

It was a poorly executed callback to that thing that political candidates do (used to do?) at the end of political ads.

Humor fail for me! :(

Oh, no, I got that part. I just didn't understand what "this games-as-art" meant.

Anyway, I've decided that my "team" or "studio" is going to be called Silhouette Games or just Silhouette, so I bought the domain name: http://www.silhouettegames.com

That will eventually be where I post screens and other stuff related to the games I make with Verge or for Android.

The process so far has been really fun. My artist is working on some new screens and I'm currently finishing up the title music and starting to implement the actual game text.

It'll only be a couple of minutes of gameplay (if that!) when it's finished, but it should pave the way for a more complete game in the future (I'm even considering just doing a cooler game around the idea of the "Lost Dog" so that we can retain some of the assets).

Anyway, that's it for now. More later!

Hey everyone,

Here's another look at the upcoming tech demo I'm working on called Lost Dog.

As you can see I've sort of made the framing look better, created my own font, and added some new artwork!

I'm pretty happy with how it's coming along. Let me know what you think!

So it's basically done, but I'm a little confused as far as how packin files work and how to make a demo so that it's just the exe and doesn't include all of my code.

I'll probably release a version with the lua in it here, but for my site and for when I hand it off to people I'd rather just give them an .exe.

Can anyone give me a hand?

So glad that this is done and works. Took me less than a month working whenever I could find time. Woo hoo!

Since you're using lua, you'll need to compile all your scripts using LuaC (see: http://www.lua.org/manual/4.0/luac.html) and stuff all of your resources into a verge packfile (.vpk) using PackEd. That's about the best you can do as an end user.

If you really want to pack it all up in a single exe, I think you could by rebuilding the engine from scratch with your game files included in the project. I have no idea how much work that would really be, though.

Also, this was surprisingly fun to play. There just needs to be more of it, so keep up the good work!

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
