From the Modarchive:
# Now featuring over 11.69GB in more than 29846 compressed music files.
# Total number of downloads from the Mod Archive: 4384016
How the hell did you find that nice song in 4384016 archives?
And it looks like that site has a nice selection of samples too.
While we are at it, can someone recommend a tracker for Windows? The last time I used one was with my Amiga. As you may imagine this is quite a while ago, and I haven't followed the tracker development since then

Yes. Yes I can.
Renoise.
FMOD doesnt support .RNS, but thats what mp3/ogg support is for anyway.

Thank you vecna! I cant track, but went to look, hopped from site to site and found a version of Cool 1.34 that runs on XP pro! Massively rocking wave editor that does about a ton of things, but alas is 'crippled' by letting you only do a third of a ton at a time (until you save, close, re-open) unless you register. Heh.

Modplug Tracker isn't too bad, but Fruity Loops is nice if you have the money. If you REALLY have the money, get Acid Pro.
-edit
Freaky, I have that exact same mod in my /music/mods/favorites folder. :D

OMG Vecna, no! Track with ModPlug, then run your mods through Renoise for effects! Thats how I did these songs. Anyone else need help with tracking things? I'd love to help out.

Readers:
I have ascertained that some of us are aware of www.chiptune.com. I advise looking at and listening to the small songs available at this site as a balence to some of the large songs loadable at The Mod Archive.

I hate Renoice. Why? 1. It's based on Fast Tracker 2's unusable interface. 2. Only seams to save it's own useless format no one uses. Sure it can export wavs or something. Screw that. I want a TRACKER, not a sound mixing studio. 3. general incompatibility with .IT effects.
That being said, I generally hate ALL trackers. Only Impulse Tracker seams to be at all useable, and even then barely. Modplug Tracker is pretty good, too I guess, but I don't like it as much. But working with any more then 4 or so channels becomes a chore. And why the hell can't you delete/insert/move channels?
That being said, trackers are better then midi shit. No custom instruments? No patterns? Screw that. I like using notation better though, but only being able to work with one channel at a time sucks ass. I might as well just work with a master event list.
If I knew the first thing about programming I would make my own bloody tracker/sequencer. I can not work with a single one of the ones I have used so far.

Well, I actually agree with you somewhat.
I hated FT2. I hated Sk@le, which was also an FT2-alike interface.
There haven't BEEN any trackers with an IT-like interface, which, back when I did tracking, I used ST3 and IT exclusively.
Neither of those trackers are usable on modern machines, however. I haven't really found modplug to be an acceptable replacement.
So, renoise at least has significant improvements over previous trackers. The next version of renoise will be, primarily, an interface overhaul (simplification), because, as they say, they literally could not add a single additional button, there simply isn't room.
Its true that nothing supports .RNS, but a well done .rns module can actually consume way more cpu time to do properly than you'd really want to do in a game anyway, so the rendering it to mp3 really is a good option.
Anyway, yeah, its not necessarily the best option for games. But, for people like us that prefer ST3/IT type interface, there ISNT a very good option. god dammit.

Well I find the renoise interface to be really cumbersome. I do hear the next version will be better, but right now it's still shit. Also I honestly don't find the new effects to be all that useful. The only new effect I want is decent reverb. Possibly using EAX. Actually, I wonder how feasible it would be to use a Z macro or a external thing to set EAX reverb on songs played through FMOD since EAX is a soundcard hardware thing and not something you need to code into the mixer...
Anyway, IT works fine on my computer (not to sure about ST3). Yet another reason not to upgrade to Windows XP. ModPlug has some things about it I don't really like, so I much prefer just to use IT. Actually I would PERFER to use something more like MIDI with IT style instruments and patterns and export it to an .IT. I wish I could compose with a layered segmented notation view, but still be able to switch to a more tracker-like view too...

This song sounds suspiciously like Braveheart's main theme; the motif is that of Bravehearts :)
Does anyone remember the Saga of the Stars (by a certain Grue-ish bitch) intro song? I remember it distinctly; a piano doing its regular four note chording while the strings enter a little later. There were several songs REALLY like it (four note piano chords, and then strings) for other Verge games.
Hm. Just reminiscing. Miss playing dos-Verge games. ;_;

Eek. Which intro song?
The current and nigh-final SotS main theme is... not a piano piece. ;)

.. o_O;
The one where .. let me recall the introduction. There were twinkly stars right? And then there's this piano going in first, and then the strings pulling long notes. :o Or maybe its not a piano; just a really bad piano sample. No? Yes? o_o.
You don't remember?
...
And I wonder why SotS never gets done.

You're talking about a song that's not been on my mind for the 5 years since it was replaced.
I think you mean this one? (.xmz = zipped xm)

:o. It's a bloody harp.
Ok fuckit, my mistake on that, but who told you to take so long on SotS, huh?! HUH?! ;p But yeah.. Something like this. This was at a time I was reading A Wrinkle in Time for my school so all this space thingy really fascinated me, and this music has a distinct... nicey... .... thingy!
:\ Yeah, just thought it worked well with the stars. That's really a part of my early teenage memories that you just posted. :o

I was under the impression that the extension for a zipped mod was actually .MDZ
Meh, Modplug seems to be happy with either. Live and learn, I guess.
