am looking for a program to design a mmog. Before I shell out the big bucks I am looking at other alternatives.Has any body designed a mmog or ever thought about it.I have a large base of programers to draw from but be for I show them this site need info.
1 can verge handle servers or do you need to create a plug in from scratch.
2 how complex can you make a custom player aka skills, powers,
3 When you create a program is the files very large,so that you can download off a site.
Am very interested but need more info please.

1. Yes, v3's netcode can handle servers. Ustor has such a program with his Work-In-Progress build of vergewars.
2. The sky's the limit. Also your coding prowess is another limit.
3. Uh, huh?

But anyways, v3 is most likely not what you want for a MMO game. Simply put, you want a piece of dedicated server-side technology for such a thing, and optimized code to boot. verge3 can only handle decentralized servers, running on someone's PC, and not a constantly running 'application in the sky'. Sorry.

I suppose if you coded your server to be all data sets and gets over HTTP getstrings, you could work a persistant world with v3 clients, but it really wouldn't have like player characters moving in synch with each other and fighting in stuff... more like just being able to private message each other like on forums, or trade items, or the such.

Verge is not intended for something as large as a mmog. Although, chances are that you're being too ambitious anyway. If I'm right, you'd be good to stay ^_^. Just... you know... make something single player.

You don't 'create a program'. In a sense, Verge is the 'engine' and every game for it is a mod. If you create something worth distributing, then you package it all up, so in a sense the final file size is up to you.

I really wouldn't start on creating an MMO though. Market is way too crowded as it is, and you're going to have a hard time creating ANYTHING that will compete with either WOW or Everquest.

There are many d&d types of mmogs out there ,hec they make up 80% of the market. But I am looking to create some thing diffrent. Am looking to create a mmog base off rifts the rpg. Also I am going to design a free mmog. The reson that I am designing it is there are so many mmogs that suck, alot of them that are free! They lack quests ,skills, classes, ectra. These games are designed to annoy. So I will take it on my self to create a true mmog with alot of the features found a pay mmog.

The reson that I am looking at verge. Is it can be use as a common platform between ALOT of programers. That will include SHSU programers, a designer of the game steal beast 1 & 2, a network admin out in germany, and many others. We will most likely rip verge apart and redesign parts of it. But we will use verge as a common starting point.I will have my group logg on with insane in their name so that you can tell that it my group. And they will have alot of questons.

Ok, now if you're really dedicated, and really serious about making a MMO, then I suggest you use a real programming language or something.

My suggestions are:
1.Java (Hey, I think it'll work nicely with the internet... I think)
2.C/C++ (Maybe use OpenGL or Allegro or something)
3.Python (Never used this before. However, I heard through the grapevine it's pretty good for online games.)

Of course, since they are watching us, I strongly recommend you use VERGE.

If you're serious about this, you should use something that is serious.

SDL + ice(www.zeroc.com) = about as simple as you should get for a serious mmog project.

Gayo

You will not be making an MMOG. But if you did, it's theoretically possible you could use VERGE. I agree with whoever said that work(learn a high-level programming language) is tiny compared to work(make an mmog) though, so on the off chance you are really dedicated to this idea you should probably make your own engine from scratch.

Gayo likes to tell people they'll fail. It's one of his endearing quirks.

He's sort of right though. You could use Verge to build almost anything you wanted! But uh... why do you want to use Verge? If you want to start from a common ground, why not pick a fast, robust programming language? I guess I, like the others who have responded, just don't understand why you'd choose a free game engine, any free game engine, for the starting point of a MMOG.

I mean, hey! If you really want to, go ahead. It would be cool to have a massively multiplayer online something or other done with Verge. If you're team leader or researcher or whatever, though, you should really evaluate what you've got and what you could have, and whether this is the right approach.

On the subject of insane people trying to do MMOs in v3, at least one Crazy Sweed has attempted to make a v3 client for a MMO.

wasnt v3 created in a big part from the code used for the never completed VergeOnline? I still lay awake at night in tears for the death of such a cool idea. ;_;

I've been away, and I just saw insaneratman's posts. If he comes back, he should know that these boards still use most of the conventions of written English, like capitalisation and good structure.

Also, I think insaneratman has made incorrect about how/what Verge is, but I have no qualifications. I just remember reading the thread about Verge3's source being held closely, in general.

Funny that 'yhnmzwcs' would be a grammar nazi! :D

Not everyone who uses bad english grammar is a 12 year old with an AIM fetish. Not everyone speaks english as a native language.

I'm working for the good of the human race. If all the time people have wasted working on MMORPGs that never happened had been spent productively we would be an immortal spacefaring race by now.

I see that I made grammar errors in my last post on this thread. I skipped an important word. I will leave the post as it is, as evidence.
