Well i stumbled on this just surfing the web and after spending quite a good amount of time browsing the site and looking through the really old forums posts i figured id make an account. From what iv gathered, the engine is made with C++ (right?) and i was thinking that it might be something interesting to mess around with while im trying to teach myself C++. Ill probally try this either way, but i wanted to know how well this would be for that task.

Now no offense, but just from roaming the forums alot of the people here seem sorta odd. That and mcgrue's avatar freaks me out for some reason.

Just to give an idea of where i stand. Im 17 going into the 12th grade (senior) and plan on in college majoring in mathematics and minoring in computer science and engineering.

Oh, i should also maybe add that i know HTML, CSS, Javascript, some VirtualBasic6 (not to useful now cause of the new framework) and i understand PHP and Mysql a bit but havn't done anything in depth with them.

Hey, bobby! Welcome to the Verge community!

To answer your question, the engine itself is made with C++, but the actual game scripts people make are done in VergeC (which is like a simplified version of C with all sorts of goodies) or, more recently, Lua (which is a funky language that has loads of nifty features -- see http://www.lua.org/).

If you know other programming languages (like you say you do), you should be able to pick Verge (and the engine source) up given enough time.

Also I tend to agree, the people here are an odd bunch. But it's an awesome and necessary kind of odd! There's just this novelty of showing off the silly ideas and things you come up with.

Oh right, and Castle Heck is intentionally filled with silly spamish threads. So don't put that as the main basis of why we're "odd" :D

I suppose sort of like you, I gained an interest for programming and stuff at a fairly young age!

If you wanna know, I was in Grade 7 (2000/2001) when I actually started being interested in making games, and so I lurked and learned all sorts of things for a few years. Grade 10 (2003/2004) was the first time I really got into making games with teams, and realizing how to write good code. In Grade 11 (2004/2005), I contributed to verge-rpg.com. In grade 12 (2005/2006), Verge's source was released on Subversion, and I became one of the developers on Verge.

And now I'm going into my third year of university, majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Math. I'm a procrastinator, and mostly averse to work that I can't find fun or rewarding, so laaaately, I've been kind of just enduring rather than enjoying or learning anything from school.

Granted, it's all part of the college experience I guess, and you can still have some fun. I still haven't reached my ultimate goal of making games, but now it's more an exercise of willpower, and lots of spare time than anything.

Er, okay, now I'm just sort of rambling here.

Anyway, it's nice to have you here! Verge is worth looking into, if you're interested in learning coding and learning how to make games.

I know my share of odd people so its not that big of a thing. Im glad someone replied at least. I guess i have a little bit more experiance then i mentioned. Iv been doing mod maps and the like for various games for quite a few years (Example: Warcraft 3) and Iv done small things in VB6, but I did make a custom game of monopoly in it pretty much just to show off in the class (Computer Science 1 and the others were not to good at it, but i did help them) .

Have you, perhaps, plans for a game you might want to make in Verge?

Not really. Ill most likely play around with the code, but most likely go with an rpg type of game and try to get as many neat little things in it as possible while living up to your standard 2d rpg. If I get pretty good with the code Ill probably mess with those net functions.

Im doing this along with quite a few other things including working on the design for a website. A link is on my profile although the only page is just a menu idea.

So, are you looking to use verge to make games, or to augment the engine itself, or a combination thereof?

I'm a jack of all trades (and truly a master of none) my own self, with a strong webapps proficiency. Always good to greet another polymath-in-training.

So, hi!

For now most likely for making games. If and when I get pretty good in C++, I'd be happy to help improve the engine.

I must say that maped3 is a pretty nice map editor. Id say I like it more then doing maps in some other single player makers I'v messed with in bored.

Ima look thought the docs and tutorials more and I might see about talking some of my internet friends to join me with this, if for nothing else they are always good for ideas.

[edit]
Rather then start another topic ima throw this here.

I saw this topic "Trying to change the EXE Icon" in the developer section. Now I know that was a question about getting it to compile right because he wanted to change the icon of the exe and that its quite old, but for those that don't feel up to doing it there is an open source resource editor I've used before.

It's quite useful.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
