Realizing that there are only a few CHR editors, and that a nice windows utility for making them is long overdue, and finally realizing that I had the necessary programming skill to do such a thing, I made a CHR Editor.

I call it VOpenCHR - The Open Source VERGE CHR Editor. Right now it only edits VERGE 1 and 2 CHRs, but I have made real progress fast, and I think it's ready for a mention. You can find it here:

http://vopenchr.sf.net/

The reason I bring this up now is because I feel it is ready for general verge community testing. Also, if you have access to an operating system other than windows, the code is designed to be cross platform compatible, and I encourage you to make at least a small effort to get it compiled on another system (anyone who can make packages for Linux or Mac are welcome). If you find bugs, please make a bug report to the project page here. If you have a helpful suggestion and it's not in TODO.txt, please make a Feature Request here.

I'm counting on the Verge community to help me make this into the tool that the Verge community, as a whole, wants. So please pitch in and test, report bugs, and make feature requests!

UPDATE: Just released VOpenCHR 0.4. In it, I added VERGE 3 CHR support. All I need now is for people to tell me what they want in a CHR editor. If you won't make feature requests or report bugs on SF, please at least respond to this thread.

I tested your editor and it looks really great so far. One thing I'd like to see though is the animation running as you're editing, similar to how ACE was. I know you already have an animation preview when you edit movement scripts, but it would greatly help to have them display while you're editing the CHR.

One little thing I notice is that when I'm editing a frame and the little tool-tip box comes up showing the (x,y) coords, it keeps following me around while I'm trying to edit.

I haven't played with it too much yet, but I like what I see so far... good stuff.

The info that comes up in tooltip form will be moved to status bars at the bottom of the window when I release 0.5. The animation view could be easily done, but I'm not sure that will be done soon.

Zulithe

Hey Tom,

Just downloaded the Oct 28th nightly from http://vopenchr.sourceforge.net/snapshots/
(only version I've used at this point)

I think you've got a pretty useable product already, this early on the development, which is awesome.

My only complaint is the speed. I'm using an 800mhz AMD Athlon based PC w/384MB RAM, and the program has a VERY noticable delay when drawing in this program. Photoshop CS works smoothly for me, so I something this minimalistic shouldn't be having these problems. The larger the image the worse it is, but it is even pretty bad when editing 1 20x20 images with only 2 frame. Hopefully it can be improved.

Another (very minor) suggestion is updating the zlib DLL to 1.2.2 which was released to fix a security vulnerability.

Well Zulithe I have heard this complaint but I can't seem to locate the cause. Zlib isn't the problem either. It is only used to compress V3 CHR frame data. I'll look into it though. Please do me a favor and put it on the feature request board to make it go faster.
