I don't know if anybody remembers it, but way back when, I made a little Verge 2 demo called Rainbow Despair. Well, the urge to make an RPG has returned so I'm starting production on a sequel (even though the original was never finished). Expect it to be spooferific - gonna toss every RPG, videogame, and anime reference I can think of into it. :)

Haven't decided if I'm going to stick with the latest build of Verge or switch to another system. The customizability of Verge is very attractive, but on the other hand, I'm a horrible artist so I'm tempted to use one of the systems with existing graphic sets (don't know if Verge has anything like this - didn't when I was around many years ago).

Oh wow, Rainbow Despair :D I totally remember that game. Brings back a lot of memories.

Anyway, resource wise, nothing much as changed but there are quite a few public domain tiles and other graphics in the files section. Plus, with a little work it's very much possible to import some of those resources from other systems into verge. I actually do this fairly often.

Whichever way you go, good luck and make sure you let us know when you have something available!

Most inspirational V2-demo ever!

d'oh, double-post.

It was inspirational, but not so inspirational you'd want me to say it twice!

Wow, people remembered my little old demo. And here I thought calling the new game Rainbow Despair 2 would be especially fitting since it'd be in honor of my fans. Both of them. :)

After messing around with the various RPG Makers, I've made the decision to use Verge 3. The other systems have their pros and I think I could probably make a full game much quicker if I used one of those other RPG systems, but I'm afraid the gameplay would be rather simplistic. Verge, on the other hand, gives me much more freedom so if I wanted (for example) to include a customizable skill tree system (say Growlanser style) along with a combo magic system (ala Chrono Trigger), and a battle conversation system (ala Persona or Megaten), I could do all of that without too much trouble (not saying that I will do all that, but it's an option). Of course, I imagine I could do similar things with the other systems, but I would have to work outside the system instead of working with the system.

Thanks a bunch for the graphics link. I'm going to try to use mostly premade and ripped images and music for the game since I have no skill in creating either although later on when the game is nearing completion, I'll probably ask for some help making a couple of custom pieces. For now, my short term goal is to study up on the Verge 3 documentation, review my old code from Rainbow Despair 1, and try to convert the stuff I'll need into Verge 3 code. Also plan on making some improvements to the old code (like having backgrounds for battles). I'm hoping to get all of that done by the end of the week (don't have much else I need to do this week since I don't start my new job for another week or two).

I'll keep you all informed on the game's progress. :)

For some verge refreshers, and for v3 specific tutorials, check out the
http://www.verge-rpg.com/new_user/ section. Rysen, Overkill, and Zip have all written some good basic level stuff, although I hope to write a comprehensive set of tutorials once the new Sully is out.

The current version of Sully has a bit of skill/party/etc/etc infrastructure you may find useful as a base as well, and it has documentation within it's folders to boot, but there aren't specific tutorials as of yet in how to adapt those existing subsystems to your own nefarious needs.

Welcome back! And please, feel free to publically release demos frequently. We need old blood showing the new kids how to show off their work like we did back in the day; Showing off work encourages others to do the same!

Incidentally, if you're feeling larcenous, I bet it wouldn't be too hard to nab a 16x16 tileset from some other source and convert it to verge format (or better yet, convert it to a basic image file and then convert THAT to verge format).

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
