Creajeux (http://www.creajeux.fr) is a french school teaching the video game industry technics.
As a team project for the students in 1st year, we decided to use Verge-RPG to create an old-school game with cartoon-like graphics called Robloc.
We even included an english version!

Here is the link to the fully playable version of the game: http://www.creajeux.fr/v2/etudiants/projet.php?prj=12

(for the clueless in french, just download the game... http://www.creajeux.fr/v2/download/Robloc/Robloc.rar)

More screenshots and details soon...

All the team hope you'll enjoy the game and thanks the Verge-RPG team for the great engine they put together!

This is really very awesome!

I assume you had different students doing things like graphics, menu systems, etc? Or how did you divide the workload on this up?

Thanks!

We had 18 students on 3D modelisation and 5 students on programming working one friday every two weeks then 2 weeks full time by the end of the year. About 175 hours per student.

We divided the students as teams of 4-5, a team per level.

We first asked the modelers to draw a simple layout on paper of each level. Then they had to add simple volumes like boxes, cylindres, to get an idea of the volumes in 3D space and set up a camera for 2D rendering.

Meanwhile the programmers where getting their hands on Verge3 engine and editor. Focusing on the possibility to import a large (2048*2048) image as background and how to create a character from a 3D model.

Then the modelers took each simple volume and turned it into a building, each time refining the model. One student per team was in charge of importing the new models and render a new image for the level. The programmers could then import it in Maped and adjust the collisions.

Another important part of the workload was modeling and animating the robots. We then used home-made maxscripts to render them as tiles and import them in vopenchr. We also had to modify the Verge3 code to allow 8 directions movement.

Depending on the abilities of each student, we had some students focusing on special parts of the game, like the menu system, dialogs, shooting system, puzzle game, etc. For example, the story was a simple background at first but evolved into a complete scenario.

The big part of the workload for the progammers was the integration of the gameplay. Even though it was a fairly simple gameplay (like get the key, open the door), it took a lot of adjustments to get it right as it was their first game.

The goal of the project was to give the students an experience of game production, working as a team and using essential game production tools like SVN for data control and Mantis for bug tracking.

By the end of the project, we had 5 main areas, 47 maps, 65 robots and 4 mini-games. The game itself might not become an all-time classic, but overall the goals have been reached and all the team can be proud of their accomplishment!

And once again, we are really thankful to the Verge community for releasing this great tool for game production learning.

That is beyond awesome. I think it's really good that students are getting to use things like SVN and Mantis while still at school, and making a game no less!

The only thing I got to make for senior project was a stupid ASP.NET website.

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
