I also don't like silent characters, although Super Mario Rpg made it kinda cool. What Omni says is very interesting, about other ways to involve the player like maybe emotionally or by having some choices on the story. That's an nice perspective of putting it, didn't thought of it like that.
Edit : WTF, this should be at the end of the thread. Pretty fucked up. O_o

So I'm working on a platform game and I have been asking myself a lot of questions on how to make the story. The big question I'm asking myself right now is, which main character should I use, one which is silent or one that takes an active part in the story and has dialogue.
When I'm talking about silent you can think of Zelda and SM RPG. As for active I mean like in most games when you are watching a movie and taking part in it.
What do you guys think? I want to know what are you opinions on this, the pros and cons of both paths on the game.

You can still have an active character and 'involve the player'. It's just involvement in a different way.
It's like the difference between 'being a character' [silent protagonist] and 'cultivating a character' [active protagonist].
You feel just a tiny bit detached from the latter but with an increased feeling of control. Whereas in the former, it is easier to personalize the experience, perhaps at the loss of some idea of 'detachment'. Detachment is not necessarily bad.
Of course, you can make an active character that you can personalize yourself in, and you can make a silent protagonist that players can't relate to. It just depends on how you tell it.

I really don't like silent characters. It's one thing if the character has no personality because the player gets to choose his actions, but for him just to be there is sort of lame. Admittedly, I love Zelda and Chrono Trigger, but...

Me? I love well written dialogue trees. But they're not the easiest thing in the world to write OR code. And they're not very common in console-style RPG's, either.
