First off, I have an idea about the sizing problem. Now, I don't mess with the fullscreen at all. (320x240 fullscreen really just looks wrong, but I don't mind windowed). But, windowed likes to open up as a title-bar, and I have to resize it to see anything. Someone's looking out, though, because when dragging to resize, it catches just a little on the right dimensions. (If that could just be made a little stronger-a wider margin where it catches, say-that would be nice.) Anyway, I found but have not tested the following file that purports to 'Resize your windows in a batch file!'.
Also, loadimage() crashes 'Epic of Serinor'. I put in messagebox()es to note where it crashes, if nobody minds. I think it is a memory-organisation problem, maybe not even associated with verge. The crash is 0167:xxxxxxxx, and I get a similar problem with the same segment from Microsoft's 'Word 97 in Word for Win95' converter.

If this is a waste of resources, sorry.

...loadimage crashes EoS? That's pretty weird. Where does it crash? Do all loadimages fail, or just the one?

I don't have win98 and I suspect whatever the problem is is some 98/v3 interface weirdness, but it can't hurt to check.

Epic of Serinor also crashed on my computer at first, I think when I turned releasemode 0 in verge.cfg (even though I should have ever had to ;__;) it was fine.

Also, 'automax 0' setting will always cause us poor Win98 users misery. But I don't think much can be done, the OS keeps getting harder to support. Look at Windows 95, support for it is basically obsolete. Windows 98 is starting to go the same way, regrettably. Solution: Buy a new PC! That's still a while off for me, though :/

Gayo

Weird. Were you able to figure out exactly what was causing the crash?

Well, that was fast. I guess I didn't mention a few things that I should have:
EOS crashes at the first menu screen, for loadimage() that gets the 'exit' option. That one would return 56, I think. Where that action would occur, I get the pagefault I mentioned.
Also, I did set releasemode 0, and downloaded the source separate from the vpk, as suggested if EOS crashes.

On a side matter, is the purpose of a vpk file to keep people from appropriating artwork and music? I habitually add music to my Winamp playlist from every game source available, but packed does not have any 'extract' mechanism that I can find.

I'm surprised how fast y'all replied.

We only look dead.

Some lightweight security is, I believe, the purpose of packing... along with making everything tidy. Interestingly enough, I left the music directory of a little project I'm releasing soon unpacked for just the reason you mentioned.

Allrighty, I just got a used laptop with win2k on it. EOS crashed on _it_. Uh.. it was a complaint from the Verge side. By the way, why does verge start up with 'xerxes' on the title bar?

Gayo

Xerxes is the C++ engine on which VERGE runs. That's probably the brief moment when it's setting up VERGE. No clue about Serinor, though -- it works fine on my win2k. Is it crashing at the same spot?

Actually, it's because VERGE is a front for SHODAN, and XERXES is being controlled by her. When you see that, it's already too late, your machine has become one with the mother.

..mm System Shock? or am I mistaken. System Shock 2 was awesome.

This is just me, but lately after trying out new MsStyle themes, Verge3 tends to appear as a titlebar on startup in WinXP...

This exact thing happens, for anyone using Windows 98. And you manually have to resize one of these...

...no?

Omni

Yup. Exactly that size, too.

Yeah, I get the choice of that or maximised window in win98. For whatever reason, when I resize the window, there is a small (too small) sweet spot where the window size will stick at the pixel-matched size. I don't know whether this has to do with verge or with my videocard driver. Uhh--here, my desktop is funny: 333Mhz Celeron(overclocked 266), 128 MB RAM, ~14GB (total) harddrives, a CDROM (R:) and a CDRW (W:), a 128MB nVidia ?x 5200, and TWO SoundBlaster Live!s (with the kX drivers).
