Hey all.

I started working on a Verge-based rogue-like quite a while ago. I haven't worked on it in ages thanks to an utter lack of free time, and other projects that I'd rather spend time on.

Even so, I'd rather not just let it all go to waste, so I figured I'd upload it here. Feel free to download it and play around; the line-of-sight and map generation stuff is kind of cool. I've included the source so that you all can pilfer, modify, or extend. Go to town!

And if you have the desire to continue it, then go forth with my blessing! I'd love to see this become something less suck.

The line of sight and map generation are pretty interesting. Just walking around a map or two is neat...I've never played a 'rogue-like' game before (I guess Rogue is a real game and they're all something like NetHack?). At any rate, cool little demo.

'Rogue-like' is the name of a genre that is basically defined by randomly generated dungeon crawls. It's named for Rogue, which was the first one... I've never played Rogue but I believe it was pretty simplistic. Most rogue-likes use text for 'graphics'... traditionally, your character is an @ character, monsters are letters, walls are pipes and dashes, and so on. Nethack is probably the most popular game known as a rogue-like. It's been in development for more than 10 years by a Usenet community (thus the name), and is an insane game to play. So many different things have been put in there that you're constantly discovering new silly things to do.

Anyway, at its core, Diablo is also a rogue-like, so it is (or was) a pretty popular genre even amongst main-stream gamers.

This is really awsome Kildorf! Perhaps this has inspired me to release my never-to-be-finished game as well! No... not Duskbane... a day will come when that is actually completed!

Nobody here has played Rogue?! It's essential that all of you play rogue. Go here:

http://www.dosgames.com/g_rpg.php

...scroll down the list to the 'R's and snag it.

Rogue is entirely turn-based, all the graphics are ANSII (ie. 16 colours, text only. Yes, you beat up capital Fs and stuff) and the dungeons are randomly generated. It's so pure you may weep. With joy.

There was a point in my life where I virtually lived off rogue-likes. My personal favourite - other than the original - is a post-apocalypic little gem called AlphaMan. At one point in it, I distinctly remember beating up Elvis and his band of homicidal impersonators.

Ha ha ha! I remember AlphaMan! In fact... here you go!

I think the rogue-like that holds the most special place in my heart, though, is and will always be Adom. That there is some fine-assed gaming.

Rysen

Very cool demo. ^_^ I've never really gotton into any rouge-like games before, except Diablo. Gives me inspiration to try something different. :)

Incidently, it may also be the explination for the lack of Rysen Ranch updates since he's been stuck in Kildorf's endless maze of horror for the last few months.

On the topic of Rogue-likes, I used to play Castle of the Winds and Exile. I even used to use an engine called DCGames when I was really young to make games, before I had discovered Verge. I'll have to check out your demo later, Kildorf, when I've got the free time.

Wait! I remember Castle of the Winds! That was a rogue-like? It was awesome!

Reply note: though I stunk at it.

The Exile series is good stuff! (Exile 3 less so...) I played COTW, too, but not as much. I have a hex hacking guide for Exile II saved games on GameFAQs. You can bypass all sorts of...obstacles with it. There, I'm yhnmzw, and I don't want to update my account because it looks too hard to assure privacy.

Also, the link up there seems to be for Blades of Exile. Haven't dealt much with that. It is separate from the Exile series. It can serve the building of new games. (Normal Exile games could too, sorta. Try loading an Exile II saved game from a directory with the Exile I outdoors.dat in it!)

Bad News: The Alphaman link won't get you to where you can download it. HOTU links off-site, and that guy's stuff is not in order. (mainpage, downloadpage, etc, but NO FILES!!)

It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
