Hello everyone,
I'm from Abandonia Reloaded, and it just so happens that I'm reviewing Diver Down. I'd like to get in touch with Grenideer to ask a few plot-related questions, but all my attempts to do so have failed (the main site contact, the verge forums contact, the email supplied with the game .txt manual). It would be great if someone could give me Grenideer's email or if he himself could email me at greywolfexcel [at] gmail [dot] com.
Thanks!

You could try http://www.grenideer.com/diverdown/index.htm
And see whether the e-mail add there is the same.
The man comes to these boards sometimes, but I haven't spoken to him for more than a year.

I tried that already, but thanks. Maybe I'll just wait and see if he notices. If not, then meh. I'll just review it anyway.

What do you need? Actually the contact link is bad on the main page. If you click on any other page then the contact link works. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I'll fix that.
As far as your review, you could either ask away here or email me from those other aforementioned pages.

Bleh, I tried emailing you twice and it didn't go through, so I'll just post here.
Let me first just say that I want to thank you personally for making Diver Down. I've seen a lot of RPG's (being somewhat of a connoisseur), and yours has stood out to be the best freeware RPG I've ever played. The plot was, as intended, engrossing and wholly enjoyable. Although it does have its faults (gameplay-wise), the superb writing and character development was more than sufficient to draw me into Minduul, Drek's plight, and the world that you created. Thank you, again.
That being said, I'm from the Abandonia Reloaded forums, a freeware site that reviews games and such, and it just so happens that I'm reviewing your game. I remember reading somewhere (in the thanks files, or the credits, I'm not sure) that if I found a plot hole, I could ask you about it. I'll take you up on that offer now, if you don't mind. :)
I'm not entirely sure what Drek's connection was to the Blessed races, or even Jamol the Trickster for that matter. Why didn't Drek die in the abandoned mine when he found the blessed artifact? And how was it that Drek's party was able to open their respective containers in Jamol's labyrinth (the hidden place under the giant rock near the big tree in the Order of Twilight's territory - sorry, I forget the exact name). I thought that it was strange that four people could just discover Jamol's hidden maze and get "assigned" elements.
If there's a FAQ somewhere that answers these questions, please direct me to it; I looked at the Verge forums, but couldn't find anything relevant.
Abandonia Reloaded's front page also has banners that display random games to help publicize them. I want to make a banner for Diver Down, but I'm not very good at making art from scratch. For this reason, I was curious as to if I could use the picture on the front page of the main Diver Down site. (yeah, the blueish/black one that looks really really cool) If not, then I'll try to find some other way to do it.
Thanks for your time, and thank you again for making such a great game.

Thanks for the compliments! It's true that I put story above gameplay. It wasn't really a design bulletpoint but when I found verge I found a perfect way to tell the story I wanted. A nostalgic part of me just went for Phantasy Star 1 gameplay and I'm happy with how it turned out.
As for your plot questions: Drek has no connection to the Blessed races. No one really does. It was world background more than anything else. If I had more time to make a full game I would have probably included an npc that was one of the ancient races. Jamol the Trickster was just background for Lumen and a minor subplot point. You run into a few of his agents in the game. And you get his artifact, the Hammer of Jamol. You can use this to open a secret (his grave) and get treasure, as well as using it to progress through a couple game obstacles. Jamol was not a Blessed, however. The Elemental Maze you speak of was Blessed in origin but it had nothing to do with Jamol necessarily. It's original purpose was never explained and is not supposed to be understood - the party merely used it as a convenient way to sneak in and out of the castle. As far as assigning the 4 elements to the party members - that was just a gameplay element to create a cool dungeon. It could be explained away if I wanted to but what's the point? It's supposed to be mysterious anyway. Anyway, it was a secret location and Kraken used his elemental magic to 'break in' per se. The castle guards (with their human magic) couldn't access those tunnels.
The only question I don't understand is you asking why Drek didn't die in the Abandoned Mine. Why should he die because he finds an artifact? It's been a while since I've looked at Diver Down so I'm probably forgetting a plot point?
Feel free to use that image to make a Diver Down banner if you like. I never made proper banners for people to use. Metro made the pic, which is why it looks so cool.

I mean the part in the Cruxen mines when he finds the Blessed artifact (which is a side quest assigned by the guild), and it was apparently booby-trapped. The rock on top of them was supposed to come crashing down, but it didn't; Drek's companion (the knight, I forget his name :\ ) said it might be because the worms tunneled through and disabled the trap, but Drek hinted at something else entirely, saying something like he felt like _he_ was supposed to take it, like it was planned. If you still don't understand, that's ok, since I'll just accept Drek's companion's answer. ^^
I understand everything else, and thanks for letting me use that picture. :) The review should be up in a few weeks, and the banner probably much later because I'm working on a few others right now.

Here's the source:
Text(0,"This holy slumber is not to be",
"disturbed by graverobbers. It is not",
"you who seeks to wake the Avatar, but",
"in fact Shalok who wishes to put you",1);
Text(0,"to sleep. Where you intended to",
"excavate the dead, in turn the living",
"shall then be buried.",
"Sleep in peace, fresh one.",0);
Sound("cavein.wav",64);
[snip]
Text(20,"So the artifact *was* above us!","","","",0);
Text(1,"Yes, and the scroll somehow triggered",
"a cave-in and caused it to fall from",
"this ceiling, which must have been",
"constructed weak on purpose!",0);
Text(20,"But weren't we supposed to be trapped",
"in the tomb forever *because* of the",
"cave-in?","",0);
Text(1,"Well, it's possible all the digging",
"that was done above already excavated",
"most of the rock from above us. And it",
"was already caved in when we got here.",0);
Text(20,"I'm sure the rockworms and time both",
"helped us out also.","","",0);
Text(1,"Yes. The trap was sprung before we",
"ever set foot in that sanctum. Hmm,",
"I wonder. . . .","",0);
Text(20,"What's the problem? Luck has been",
"with us in these mines.","","",0);
Text(1,"Well, that trap was directed at grave",
"robbers. We didn't even know about the",
"sarcophagus until we got here. I",
"wonder if this wasn't an accident?",0);
Text(20,"Hey Drek, think what you want to",
"think, but I think we should get back",
"to the Questmaster.","",0);
So the old excavators were trying to find the artifact and have already caved in parts of the mine. Time took its toll on the trap, and the rock worm did further damage.
Drek just brings up the possibility that their intentions were not to rob the grave, so they were meant to be spared.

I got the hammer, and tried it everywhere around his grave both in the cemetery and underground. Is it really possible to get into his individual grave, or do you mean just the underground area?

Yes you can get into his grave. The tombstone says something about hitting it down. Stand on top of it, face down, and use it.

Got it, thanks. Thought it was something like that, but only tried it from the front. I didn't get that being behind it was supposed to represent being on top of it.

It's interesting... I remember that sidequest now, and I too remember thinking at that point that Drek and the blessed races had some sort of connection.
And I never did figure out how to get into Jamol's grave... will have to go do that. :)
