Hi everyone,
I`m a noob so please go easy on me.
I have trouble running maped3, more specifically, I can't run it at all. When I open it, I get a window 'Application Error' message saying:
"The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application."
All the demo's and other stuff works fine, but maped3.exe doesn't.
I'm using windows XP.
Can anyone tell me what to do? I really want to get verging.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Do you have the .NET framework installed? I couldn't explain to you exactly what it is, but the dev utilities that you need for verge3, such as maped3, require it in order to run. If you don't have it you can download it at MicroSoft's site, here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en
Download it, and install it, then try running maped3 again.
Also, on the side bar of this web site are a few handy links (the v3 Manual and Other Documentation) that'll take you to tutorials and information on the various aspects of creating a game with a verge. They're works-in-progress but they have a lot of usefull info that should help you get started. I also recommend reading Omni's tutorials on getting started. They can be found here
Hope that helps :) And welcome to the verge community!

It works! Thanks a zillion Rysen!
I noticed the "requires the .NET runtime" comment in the FAQ, but didn;t know what it meant.

Happy now? ;)
Also, Rysen being a big boy (and faq admin) should have spent the time he did over typing out duplicate information instead adding this himself. </evil Stalinish vitriol>
As a more general point, the faq sucks, largely because people answer questions here or on irc and never think 'Hey - this should be in the faq somewhere'. So now WHENEVER you answer a question, please just put it in faq format and post it in the faq talkback. This takes like two minutes, and will mean a USEFUL faq in no time. I'll grab a couple of willing people as editors etc as well.... speaking of which Alex, what have you volunteered to help with? ;)

Good idea, I'm sure I'd make a wonderful editor! Uhhh... but maybe help is best left to those who know what they're talking about... ;) But if you're ever in need of a beginner's guide to naval warfare of the 18th century, let me know. :)
EDIT:

You need to install the .NET framework - (click on the hyperlink there to go to page explaining why and how). Note, this isn't needed to play verge games or even program them, just to use the map making tools.
You bloody cheater, you haven't explained what it is at all!

Just go through the faq thread and post a few questions and their answers in the talkback. Your extensive verge knowledge is up to that mate.
Also, I didn't cheat, it's called A LINK to information I put together previously, because nobody else had bothered, despite answering the SAME BLEEDIN' QUESTION every five seconds....

Damn, I saw the link and presumed you'd gone the lazy "link to the Microsoft site and avoid answering the question yourself" route. I'm sorry I doubted you. I'll never do it again, I promise. :(

Well I'm glad that got sorted out quickly. Welcome: we're all warm and friendly here. Well, most of us. Tatsumi's state of mind is questionable at the best of times..
Oh, and root around the verge3/contest directory for "Parallel 7," a game made for a contest which is currently being worked into a full RPG. You'll like that, although I think someone may have deleted it in mistake: I've dispatched Zip an e-mail on the subject but the general gist of it is that someone thought the patch was the full game and deleted the game and left the patch. Woops.

Don't worry Interf. it's still there just the depreciation-clean-up has combined all the versions into one entry. Also, the original rar is rather hidden by all those broken patches, so maybe it would be a good idea to upload a fresh version. But it would be nice to have some phresh content too. ;)

Alex, 18th century naval warfare? Did you see Master and Commander? (shamlessly off-topic)

No I haven't seen it. Is it any good? Apart from having Russell Crowe in it, I mean...
EDIT: Wait, that doesn't sound right... what I mean is that Russell Crowe pisses me off slightly, not that I like Russell Crowe... phew, glad I got that sorted out. :)

Er...I don't really know that much about Russell Crowe besides the fact that he got the starring role. My friend and I believe the movie is awesome, however, bloody awesome, and we took a punch at trying to get into the book series....we're still working on that, though.
I mean, it's just awesome. It makes you want to go command your own ship or something. I toyed with an idea for Verge game about naval warfare briefly afterwards but couldn't think of anything. The movie is very immersive. That's some sound-stage, too. It's just great.

Master and Commander was good. I'm usually not too fond of naval warfare movies or movies that take place at sea, but they pulled this one off really good.
By the way, it's amazing how a topic about maped3 could turn into a Master and Commander discussion :D

You could just take a real historical event and write a story around that. There are pretty much loads to choose from, especially in the 17-1800's.

Yeah. That is an idea. I was thinking more along the lines of simulation (kinda like Pirates!, which, when my friend showed it to me, I asked if he was playing Master and Commander: The Game) and that's probably why it didn't mesh--the best part of Master and Commander wasn't necessarily the battle but the characters, and the story idea does suit an RPG better.
