Ive been looking for a good game maker for a while, one similar to rpg maker, but free, i downloaded a few things from this website but there doesnt seem to be an actual game maker, did i miss something, or is this just some sort of engine you use with another program or something?

VERGE isn't like RPG-Maker, but it CAN do RPG-maker like things.
It doesn't have a centralised "game maker" program. Most of the work is done by a combination of text-based scripts, maps made with the map-ed program, and sprites put together with CHRmak, which are read at runtime by the VERGE.exe program (though occasionally this is renamed to the name of the game, it's still VERGE.exe).
Most of the people who actually do anything worth-while for VERGE these days hide over on Google Groups, so I apologise if my description is lacking. However, one thing VERGE does have is immense flexibility in what you can do with it.

This is not RPG Maker. Although having things done that easy is nice, it lacks flexibility. You need to use tools to edit Verge's resources, VergeC to specify your game's behaviour and then Verge will glue it all together. Admittedly the tools sort of suck though.

I just never have anything to talk about, and I don't think hyping the engine work is always the greatest idea when we haven't had a public release in almost two years. XD
Really though, needs more public releasin' I think. Maybe if I release the trunk build of the SVN for the PC someone will poop out the Mac and Linux builds (maybe? do we actually have working recent versions?). I think some of this crap has been hidden from the public for far too long, and I think the community would be a lot more lively if they got their hands on some of the wealth of unreleased features! It'd be nice if we could be all professional about it and release 'em all at the same time but I think the huge gap between public releases tells us this isn't gonna happen.
Thread hijacked, since I think we probably scared off this person anyways. Discuss!

Overkill: Do we have an up-to-date change log since last release? I don't want to make any promises, but I've got a Mac and long weekend coming up.

I second that note about doing worthwhile things with VERGE and not lurking on Google Groups.
VERGE is basically RPG-Maker for smartasses. There is no unified editor: you get something for putting maps together and that's about it. You need to do your art in something like Paintshop Pro, you need to write code in VERGE's lovely scripting language (I recommend Textpad for that) and putting together art for entities requires some command-line shenanigans.
Sounds scary? You betcha. I'll be the first to admit the learning curve is a little steep to start with, but there are two things that make it worthwhile:
1. The satisfaction that all but the most basic stuff in your game is entirely your own work.
2. The fact that VERGE is frankly ridiculously flexible compared to RPG Maker. I mean, you could knock up a version of Columns if you felt like it. Somebody probably already has.
So yes, not like RPG Maker, but capable of doing anything RPG Maker can do and much more. The down side is that it requires that bit more effort.
In need of encouragement (assuming you haven't already run away in terror)? Grab some games from our archive. Definitely have a go on The Sully Chronicles (VERGE's "pack-in" game).

There has been an entry in the changelog for basically every revision in the SVN.

Okay, Overkill, I may nab you some time on the weekend if I need some questions answered. Hopefully there shouldn't be any big problems.

No offense taken! I suppose I should throw more emotes everywhere to make my post seem less serious? >_> Also! What happened to the whole making-a-public-release thing that was supposed occur on the long weekend, Kildorf? ;_;

What happened to the whole making-a-public-release thing that was supposed occur on the long weekend, Kildorf? ;_; I ended up being less free timey on the long weekend than I expected (which happens EVERY weekend, long or not). I also realized that there is an (almost?) up to date Mac version out there; we just need to track down kattkieru from the mailing list and get his version!
As for Linux, I don't know? Do we need a "release" for Linux? Would Linux people be just as comfortable getting stuff from an SVN repository and compiling it themselves? Anyone have any input here?
