Right...let me explain the problem from the start...
...in the beggining...to far? ok...
(sorry, cheap joke)
I have windows XP. I downloaded the Verge client and I remember trying to run maped3 before and I got an error. Anyway, then I came upon the little dity that made a lightbulb turn on in my head and it had 'You can program with this!' written all over it. I went through 'Hello World' and now I want to try my hand at basic mapping. Pretty simple so far, right? good.
So I went to the mapping tutorial thing and discovered I needed .net (I run XP but I downloaded it anyway. Couldn't hurt). I got the same error as before. I tried to re-download .net but nothing happened. I tried IRC help but they told me to post here (thanks for trying, though)...I'll post my error dialogue...

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0x350 (848), Thread id=0x6ec (1772).
Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.

I tried both OK and Cancel. Neither does much. I also just noticed that the numbers in the parenthesis varry.
Thanks for your time in advance.

I don't really know anything about why Maped3 would crash on launch, but, do you have all of the DLLs in the Verge package extracted to the directory where you run maped? Probably, but that's the only thing I could think of...
You downloaded the .Net redistributable runtime, right?

Aolo, you will need the .NET runtimes installed to use maped3.
Don't worry, it's not painful to install. ;)

I am on a non-administrative Windows XP account and may not get that level of access, if that makes any difference to you(r adapting maped3 to run on this kind of setup--yes, yes I have .net installed). My error is the same.
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id=0xf28 (3880), Thread id=0x940).
Click OK to terminate the application.
Click CANCEL to debug the application.
OK Cancel
I suspect that students and others on networks of (semi)public computers are numerous. I also feel that there are a good deal of them that would like to make Verge3 maps.

Well, hey, there's more than one way to make a game than using Maped3, right?
Maybe Verge3 needs a SaveCurrentMap() function, so programmers can load and alter maps without using Maped3.

One of the reasons I wanted to make Lax was so that I'd never have to touch that horrible program again....

I still mostly use Maped 2 myself, and only use Maped 3 for conversion and laying down the v3 obs and zones...

I'm desperate. Could you please tell me a bit more about the program you mention, Lax? I would love to be able to make maps again!

Lax doesn't really do anything *yet*. Its intention was to have randomly generated maps, so to reduce a load of time making maps, and have unique worlds for every player. However, my dungeon algorithm is way too slow (for me), which tells me there's probably a better way. The dungeon algorithm still needs the addition of rooms, different types of scenes for each room, and smoothing of tiles (ex. grass tile is near a water tile, so make the grass tile into an edge). Though it does currently take care of walking on multiple layers (floors) of the map, even layers with parallax, thus the name 'Lax'. Lax really won't be much help to you, sorry.
Since you can't Maped to open, why not switch to ika instead, because you won't get admin privileges on your network, and the dev team probably can't do anything to get Maped to run on restricted systems? Or I guess you could wait the long time it'll take TomT64 and his team to create SSMITE.

Am I the only one here who's fairly happy with MapEd3 at the moment and hasn't really had any (serious) problems with it for quite some time?
If you really want a better map editor, try holding Tatsumi's head under water for a minute or two.

at first maped3 had quite few annoying bugs, but after the bugfixes it works really well even on my win98 comp. and since tile editing can be easily done in another programs, I really don't have any complaints on maped3.

In my opinion, Maped3 is almost perfect in its current incarnation. Should it ever have brushes implemented, it will be perfect in my view. Everything else it lacks like tile editing can easily(and possibly more efficiently) be done with other programs like Photoshop.

I would also like to petition for brushes. I *WANT* those: if I have to lay down another bloody tree in 640x480 by hand again, I'll go loopy.

Yes, Maped 3 is very satisfactory. All it needs a bit of polish and it would rock out. If the import crashes and freeze on drag-out-of-map-area ever were fixed, it would be desirable. However, I've managed to adapt to these things. I now carefully lay out tiles to make sure they never drag outside the editing window boundary, and always import in small chunks (it seems it depends on image size, whether or not ME3 will spit dumb errors at you). I also covet after this sacred 'brush' interface, especially if the brush tool is able to paint on multiple layers (like tree bottom, tree top, and obstruction all at once), because that would be awesome!
Anyway, I like Maped 3, it just needs moar goedness.

Multi-layer brushing: hell yes! Storing brushes in a little library, making them applicable only to particular tilesets and the like. This would be utterly cool.
