Alright guys, I felt the need to shake something up and get this big slab of code onto the table for some folks to help me chew on.

I am releasing my c# (xna) game engine - CAROT ENGINE - alpha 1.

It is quite verge-inspired, as you might expect, and makes use of all the old verge resource formats while throwing in more than a few new features, not the least of which is the potential to run on an xbox 360.

I'm looking for a few good men to tear into this and make something with it. I'll be on 100% engine devving duty, cranking out whatever you find you need and stabbing bugs through the heart with my dull wooden wit. We need a proper packin to escort this game engine into the hearts of indie gamedevvers throughout the world.

Looking for something a little different? Give it a shot and let me know what you think. I'll have an SVN set up soon, and I'll let you check in your games so that I can fix them as I tweak the engine while it is still prototypish.

You have a very nice engine so far. I've downloaded and tested the demo application. Since it uses XNA, it has serious potential. Do you plan to have any 3D support to it? Once I get off my 'you-know-what' and learn C#, I'll see what I can do to contribute. But I'm not making any promises.

As for engine issues, I found a few that were easy to spot. When you load any map, it sometimes 'streaches' a few of the tiles out here and there. Also, the character only moves horizontally and vertically. Are you planning to have per-pixel character movement?

I also think that you should have a screenshots and features page on your project page to attract more users.

Good luck with your project.

UPDATE: The program crashes when you minimise the window. I don't know what it is.

I dont think I have an XNA installed in my PC.

Just curious, when you said "verge-inspired", does it mean that users will have to make scripts for the engine to interpret? Or, users have to write C# codes and have carot engine as lib?

From the impression that I'm getting, all the game/event handling will be done by scripting and then will be compiled with software such as Visual C# 2005 Express. Although I've only created basic C# programs and never really experimented with the source code of CAROT, I can tell just from looking at it, that it should be a little bit similar to VergeC except for the apparent C# coding style.

And it would be nice if there was just one single application instead of a few 'long-named' DLL files. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback spaceseel. I'll look into it.
Getting rid of the multiple dlls is quite possible. Its more convenient for devving this way, but it could be done for a game that you were ready to release.

I would appreciate screenshots of the 'stretching' you observed. The character engine is optimized for tile movement. I'll have to resurrect the per pixel movement. Thatll happen... as soon as someone needs it!

I think I fixed all the issues with minimizing. Also I added loadimage0 for 8bpp png and pcx. Also I improved the initialization logic.

I personally think it's up to the user which character movement mode they wanted. You could create a command that determines which kind of movement the user wanted (maybe like: SetMovementRender() or something like that and have tile-based as default). But this is just a suggestion.

At the moment, I have no idea how to post images to forums right now, so if I run upon it again, I'll e-mail you the screenshot. And it may be a good idea to let everyone know that they would need to have .NET Framework (whatever version you used) and XNA framework installed before using. Otherwise, it won't work properly (it crashes without XNA framework) on their systems.

*UPDATE*: It seems to crash even when I installed the proper frameworks. I dunno if this is something in the program itself or what. I had to reinstall windows, so I don't know what it is. So I can't send you a screenshot until I get the program running again without crashing on me.

I'll post a prereqs list of links. I assumed folks would know to install XNA, which itsself can't install without .net 2.0 already installed.
