Rysen, the mind behind the compo-winning Phoenix Flame, has released an early demo of a Harvest Moon clone called [Rysen Rancher]. Anyone who has played Harvest Moon will find the premise, gameplay and graphics very familiar -- as a farmer boy with a cute hat, you use an array of tools to clear fields, till soil, and raise crops, which you can then sell for money in order to buy more crops, and eventually cows and so forth. Those who never played the Harvest Moon series might scoff at the idea of a farming game, but it's surprisingly fun.
Rysen Rancher is in a very early stage of development, and this demo showcases the basic gameplay elements but is a little aimless, as spring never ends and the farmer never tires. There are also a number of bugs, and the hit detection is a bit spotty, since, as with many V3 games, RR really wants to be tile-based. However, it's interesting to see the mechanics of Harvest Moon translated to VERGE, and things like the town promise to be very interesting once fully implemented. For now, the infrastructure is all in, and the graphics and music are very pleasant and atmospheric -- the tool animations in particular are dangerously adorable.
Farming sims aren't for everybody, but if you feel that there hasn't been enough hoeing in VERGE games thus far, you should definitely give Rysen Rancher a look. This is one to keep an eye on.
