Well, folks, here it is, the first beta of
WinV2. Download it
here, and also check out Zaratustra's re-release of
4Four packaged with WinV2. Short version is: WinV2.0 is rewritten from scratch, NOT a port of existing V2 code to Windows; includes joystick/gamepad support, optional 2xSAI graphics filters, and drastically increased stability. This is the first release of the V2.5-compatible version; there will be two main versions of WinV2, one aimed at being as compatible as possible with existing V2 games (ok, admittedly, mainly Zara's games: This whole project was basically to let me play
Zeux in Windows 2000 with less suckage), and another one aimed for future V2 games that will fix up lots of stupid things about V2, add new features, and break compatibility. More information is available in the readme.
My understanding is that
Zara is working on re-releasing most of his other games with WinV2; I believe that
SnakeSnake will work directly with WinV2; Zeux needs slight modifications, so a new version will be released shortly.
I'd like to admit upfront that this release is a bit under-cooked. That's why it's beta1. I intend to release updates very frequently, every week or so most likely. The VCC and maped included in the zip are just straight out of v2k+j. This may be replaced with windows-friendly versions in the near future, but I make no promises. Just an engine isn't that hard to do, but since it is a total rewrite, there are inevitably lots of things that aren't finished that I frankly forgot about.
Lastly, I'd like to welcome
The Verge Source back into the VERGE Community. tatsumi has re-opened his site, with a major facelift thanks to
evilbob. Check it out.
