Okay, that misspelling has gone on long enough.

I'm sure you can get plugins for lightwave, lightwave isnt a special way of rendering, its everything. I have heard good things about the lightwave native renderer though. and if you think lightwave is expensive, look at the price for maya, 3dsmax, and expecially houdini. then you will know what expensive means ^_^

and If you're trying to learn, and not going to sell anything theres no shame in turning to emule.

Yeah, I know there are more expensive ones, but I still say that that price is enormous considering there are very competent renderers and modellers that are freeware. ;-)

Surely you have the power to change the whole topic title, right? USE YOUR GODLY POWERS!!!

Or not, obviously.

And yes, many professional 3D packages are widly overpriced. Most either shoot for a dodgy copy or lean on their Uni to get them a copy ;-D.

How fast are these 3D programmes nowadays? I remember back in the aforementioned days of the Amiga, particularly complex pics could take over 24 hours to render... That must be considerably better now, but it must still take a good few minutes? The rendering time (and I suppose the system requirements) were what put me off from all but the most elementary forays into 3D stuff at the time...

They're much faster (a single frame should never usually take more than a minute tops - with lots of effects AND a high-ish poly count) although if you DO push the boat out you can expect to wait a while for things to render. Basically, it's gotten faster but people are wanting to do more, hence what is NOW an "ultra-complex" scene (compared to the Amiga days) will still take a while. But it looks VERY nice.

the movie I posted took about 2 minutes a frame to render and all together it took about 10 hours. That should give you a good idea.

a single picture can take hours upon hours to render in you're using a lighting algorithm called global illumination where it simulates light bouncing off objects. Its death @_@

Ah, yes. Global Illumination. Jesus that thing takes ages.

Wow! i used to play system shock 2 all the time... my roommate and i played all the way thru on coop... so, i commend ur efforts... I expect that at some point i'll have to become a lot more familiar w/ 3ds myself

I honestly don't know anything about the amiga program. It's just another random 3d modeling prog for the pc. it's as modern as 3ds and has about the same tools. give or take a few. it's got a really good modeler, but i can't get adjusted to the interface.

All in all... the truth is... It's an Ex GF... She crushed my heart a year or so ago... and while i'm over her... it's still nice to find lil ways to get back at her. :P

Strangely, Hastings, a local software and music store has a huge discount for students. i don't know if the student version is crippled or whate, but maya was only 150$
