So, there's been some talk of resurrecting the VMG (Verge Music Guild, for those who haven't seen Verge through the thick and thin). There's also some interest in, well, artsy stuff.

Is there any interest in creating a Verge subsite (something like http://vault.verge-rpg.com) where we can put our music (in public domain, of course) and art for use in Verge games? Over time, assemble some music and art packs, and maybe we'll see a couple dozen cookie-cutter games like all the Hahn look-alikes. I could make a site, we could use this board as, uh, a board... If Lore wants to host a bunch of music and crap, we'd be all set.

Any thoughts?

You mean an actual "vault" site that archives all publicly released goods? That'd be a good idea; the current V-rpg site structure is good but it's not so easy to navigate through sections and subsections and even more subsections.

We can release our art/music to the public in that way I guess; making it easier for Vergers to view, access and use it for their own projects. A concern we might have is unauthorised usage of our art/music/code, but then again that can already be done through the current setup of the Verge scene..

Good idea; and it might take off. Maybe the other Vergers can bring up some points about this idea.

The current filesystem is due to be expanded upon.

Tell Thinice I want his blood. ;D

I'm thinking it would be nice to have the v-rpg filesystem set aside for engine, demo, game, code and tool releases. A second 'vault' would be dedicated to art and music resources. Y'know, v-rpg for the code side of things, the vault for the design side of things. Something that displays previews of character and tilesets, stuff like that.

We could even have a compo or two to drum up some cookie-cutter content :)

Thoughts? Should everything be kept nice and happy together at v-rpg? Or should the artsy side of things get its own section?

I'd be down for having a vault thing. What you are talking about is art/music made specifically for use by everyone else. So Arias' point about people ripping art and music is well... thats the point of the vault. I just make generic town songs so if people need town music they grab a tune from the vault. Or if they need a town tileset. I like the idea.

What I'm afraid is of people stealing things and not giving credit to the original author >_

[edit: FUCK. I posted a medium length message and the display comes out like that. No time to retype, have to study for calculus tomorrow... will give more ideas t0m0l0!]

That happened to me, once. An entire PAGE LONG political rant on the castle heck forums was erased. It is injustice :\

We would force everyone to give credit. Also, the stuff in the vault would probably become well recoginzed.

Troupe: Exactly -- given the cookie-cutter nature of the vault, people couldn't easily take credit because, quite simply, we would all know they were lying. As in, if someone tried to pass off Hahn's graphics as their own, we'd all throw a laughing fit.

"Give credit. We'll know if you don't."

Actually I'm not referring to WITHIN Verge; if we make a site that is publicly accessible, people using other engines can simply come off and rip off our graphics/music, without us knowing about it.. I'm not afraid of within-Verge "ripping", because we'd be very familiar with all the demo/game releases..

Well.. If you guys are really up for it, then we should start :p

That was probably the hand of god stepping in and saying "enough". ;)

The only politics worth discussing on vrpg are about warring fictional kingdoms over magical artifacts, dammit! ;)

... y'know, that should really get its own board.

zathras

uh... how about making screenshots that are a little blurry or 30 seconds of mp3s available on the public site and the prospective game maker contacts the artist / musician or a manager of the vault for the actual files?

/shrugs/ I know, it's a pain, but that's one idea.

Personally if I am making music for public use, I don't mind if the public uses it. If they don't give me credit, so be it. Its not like I'm missing out on any royalties or something. If they take credit for my work, then maybe I'll be a little angry. Bah, it doesn't matter to me, Zathras' idea is a good one.

I think it's quite a pain, Zathras.. :D~ It blogs down the system because you have to wait for the author's permission.. and if the author has gone for a holiday? And if we really make it available to the public, I guess we don't really need the author's permission, just due credit. So.. yeah.

Someone has to get this up and going.

No.

Wait, that didn't have quite the necessary force behind it.

NO.

If you want to discuss politics, go to a political site.

Politics suck. And two out of the three Triumvirs believe that politics really do not have much to do with games, nor with civil discussion.

I will not entertain any other suggestions on this matter.

Man, I meant the warring fictional kingdoms, not whatever's going on in North America. Goodness.

Grue should rename threads to boards. Then everyone can have his own board!

Ben McGraw's lovingly crafted this website from scratch for years.
It's a lot prettier this go around because of Jon Wofford.
