I started with Python about two weeks ago, and I was on IRC on my first night begging for help because the stupid language wouldn't cooperate with me. Somewhere in the process of that conversation (after I successfully created my first window!) someone (I think it might've been Ear, but I'm not sure) told me that if I really wanted to impress him, I should make a text box that stays on screen while you walk around, a la Chrono Trigger.

I'm happy to announce that I've done it! (As if anyone cares, but I'm posting anyway =P )

And not only that, but it scrolls the text onto the box as you walk as well! And the whole shebang works with multiple text boxes! And translucency! And really cool borders! And you can advance the text to the end or just skip the box altogether!

I'm cleaning up the code right now, and I'll release it on my site (http://www.angelfire.com/rpg/invic) sometime tomorrow. I'll post again when I do. I'm all for open-source, that's why I'm making my wonderful window code available to all!

And to whoever gave me that little "challenge," do you have anything else up your sleeve? I seem to work best with that kind of motivation :)

That is all.

ummm... make a Secret Of Mana type real time battle system and put it up open source so I can nab it and not have to revisit programming and fry me brains.

:)

I won't say too much, but in the development of our game, something kinda-sorta like that very well may emerge. Use your imagination :)

Well, really, a RTBS isn't too difficult to do, it's just difficult make it "feel" right. That takes tweaking of variables like speed, hit distance, control delay, and stuff like that. (Okay, so control delay isn't a variable, so shoot me)

If you wanna nab some code REAL quick, there's a few RTBS tech demos on tvs.mastercain.com. My personal recommendation is Rex, a 48HoV game. It's really easy, but the RTBS is pretty god (if basic) and it has a cool title screen :)

That is all.

yeah Rex is great but the monsters just charge you if your in front of them. a bit too easy. now if it could track the player and chase after him/her... woah... but thinking about how to do it in code makes my brain shrivel up and smell bacony.

As if that wasn't already possible with VC...

But, congratulations, at least you're doing something.

I did some of that in VC before, anyway. I find it a little cleaner and easier in Python, using classes and OOP and all that good stuff, but to each his own.

Mostly, I was posting in reponse to that IRC conversation, and also to announce that I would be releasing that code. Honestly, even though I've been around here for ~3 years now, this'll be the first time I've released something to help the community.

How's your game coming?

That is all.

As promised, my textbox stuff is released and on my site. You can get it here:

http://www.angelfire.com/rpg/invic/download.html

It contains a basic window system, easy-to-use textbox (that supports multiple active textboxes a la FF7), customizable borders (with two included), options and external settings file, hookretrace system (a little snazzier than v2.7's builtin), some miscellaneous graphics functions that I haven't actually used yet, and FULL DOCUMENTATION.

Play, and be merry.

That is all.

Sorry to disappoint, but as we have so little done currently (aurora's so busy with other stuff lately he hasn't drawn anything in a long time) we actually don't have any shots!

Oh well. That is all.

Although work has been tedious, things are moving.

Ear

Unlike you, I actually DID that with VC, in case you don't remember. Let me tell you, making something similar with Python is much easier.

It wasn't me who gave you the challenge though. ;) I, unfortunately, haven't worked on the Python port of my textbox/menuing system recently.

Yes, making it with Python would be much easier.
I never said that it wouldn't be. And unlike you, ya moron, I don't jump to conclusions about whether or not someone actually did something. I have done it as well (seeing how yours was very unappealing) but eventually berid it when I figure I could get along well with a simple and normal scrolling text function
(it wasn't such a waste of time though, I learnt some new ways handling more complex operations).

Pfft. Quit being so jumpy or else you'll fall on upright broken shards of glass.

...and you get a like reply in return. Come on, you can't actually expect to post that and NOT be jumped on! If you're not gonna post something constructive, don't bother!

Roto

I did say something constructive.

I said it could have been done in VC. There's nothing wrong about that. I'm not lying. It wasn't a swipe at Python, just stating an obvious fact. Would you prefer a lie?

Then, I said it was totally swell that he's working on something. Should I have told him to be lazy?

*sigh*

Ear

Yes, but since I've coded more VC than you ever will, my opinion is GOLD compared to yours. ;)

invicticide didn't even mention VC, and your post has a "so what?" tone to it. This reaction isn't surprising at all.

Before you (read: whoever is reading this right now) make sure you're contributing to a discussion, instead of perpetuating one of those oh-so fun (read: retarded) flame wars.
