Did anyone make a walkthrough for that second puzzle (the blocks one) in there?

Can't seem to figure it out :)

Gayo

You are a wimp. Block puzzles should be ingrained in your geekish mind! When pushing blocks, a true gamer enters a trance state, suspended between eternity and the moment.

Someone has been working on a Diver Down FAQ, and virtually nothing's done yet, but the block puzzle is one thing that is done. However, I'm not sure that he wants it linked yet, so I'll just post the entire block segment here. Normally I wouldn't since it's spammy, but this is a thread entirely about solving the block puzzle, so enh.

PASTY MODE ON

Go down the ramp to enter the area where the blocks are. If you press enter
when facing a block, it will travel in the way you are facing until something
stops its movement.

First we will work on getting the green blocks in place in the green gaps.

There are three green blocks in the room. Find the green block furthest to the
right.

01) Kick the block right so it goes into place in the gap against the wall.

Now there are two green blocks, one above the other. The next block is the
bottom green block.

02) Kick the block down so it stops against the wall.
03) Kick the block right so it slides into place in the gap against the wall.

The next block is the last green block.

04) Kick the block left so it stops against a rock.

05) Kick the block down so it stops against a rock.

06) Kick the block left so it stops against a rock.

There are three gray blocks in a row. The next block is the blue block above
the third gray block to the right.

07) Kick the block up so it stops against a rock.

The next block is the blue block furthest to the left.

08) Kick the block right, so it stops against a blue block.

Now we kick the last green block into place.

09) Kick the block down so it stops against a gray block.

10) Kick the block left so it stops against a rock.

11) Kick the block up so it stops against a blue block.

12) Kick the block right so it stops against a wall.

13) Kick the block up so it stops against a rock.

14) Kick the block left so it stops against a rock.

15) Kick the block up so it slides into place in the gap.

There are three blue blocks in a row. The next block is the middle one.

16) Kick the block down so it stops against a blue block.

The next block is the lowest blue block that you just kicked a block against.

17) Kick the block right so it stops against a wall.
18) Kick the block up so it slides into place.

The next block is the blue block furthest to the right, below a rock.

19) Kick the block left so it stops against a rock.
20) Kick the block down so it stops against a gray block.
21) Kick the block left so it stops against a rock.
22) Kick the block down so it stops against a rock.
23) Kick the block left so it slides into place against the wall.

Now there are four blocks in a square (actually a rhombus) formation. The next
block is the lower-left block.

24) Kick the block left so it stops against a rock.

The next block is the lower-right block of the formation.

25) Kick the block left so it stops against a blue block.

The next block is the upper-left of the square formation.

26) Kick the block right so it stops against a blue block.

Now there are two pairs of blue blocks. The first pair is the pair to the
right. The next block is the right block of the pair.

27) Kick the block down so it stops against a blue block and is in place.

The next block is the other blue block of the right pair.

28) Kick the block down so it stops against a rock and is in place.

The next block is the left block of the remaining pair of blocks.

29) Kick the block down so it stops against the wall.

Now there is one blue block left to kick into place.

30) Kick the block left so it stops against a rock.

31) Kick the block down so it stops against a blue block.

All of the blocks are now in place, and you will be able to walk across the
bridges you have made to the control device.

Looking at that, I'm not sure if I could ever actually complete Diver Down on my own.

Heck. I need a strategy guide to get any semblance out of a Final Fantasy. "But it should be a discovery and exploration!" Not when you pretty much have to find it all to get the full experience for your forty/fifty dollars.

A good RPG doesn't typically hide stuff so deeply that you need a strategy guide to find it. It's a rare FF where you need a guide to find anything, for example.

...FF9 is a rare FF.

Thank you very much! :)

Just looking at that makes me glad I didn't try harder and get a headache, tell the person who wrote that thanks too please.

edit: also, #14 should be right instead of left

dont worry, that is the only hard puzzle in the game I swear

Ya, there are some early (I don't even want to call them puzzles) that were kinda dumb, and hard because of that. But as far as true puzzles, this is the only hard one. In fact, there are not too many other true puzzles in the game.

BTW, you should be able to solve all the green blocks first without having to touch blues. But I'm sure there are many solutions. It's not as hard as the walkthrough makes it sound.

Gren! Is your e-mail working? O_o. My hotmail seems to be flooding your e-mail address purge@... I have no idea what's happening o_O. Plus, someone started asking me for walkthrough questions since he couldn't get through to you :D Haha.

Well, if you could please send me your new e-mail address ^_^;; I'd like to have the speech/menu portraits files from DD to keep (because this is a new computer I'm using, and I forgot to bring the CD I burned that contained all the DD files from the old comp).. And tell me about your new job and such too :D

grenideer

I just moved so my email address (the bellsouth isp one) is dead. The grenideer domain is still in my name but due to some bad planning on my part it is still forwarding to the bellsouth one, so people won't be able to get through to me with DD questions. The movers FINALLY just brought my stuff, so I'll get my computer hooked up and get online ASAP. It'll still take a while, so just wait a bit for me to send those files.

At the moment I'm online at Insomniac right now :) I'm working with a great bunch of guys but keeping pretty busy. You can email me in the meantime at grenideer at netscape net if you need to. I'll fill you in when I get more settled.

Oh well, I'll just wait till you get more settled and stuff :D I'm really excited about your job though! :D:D:D

About the Guide and Game
Diver Down is the first complete RPG created with the verge2 engine. It's an
indie RPG, so it plays on the only strength it can have, a good story. The
graphics aren't bad that it makes the game unbearable to play and the music
is good enough. The cut scene art is engaging. It has a few issues that
made me frustrated at the game and hopefully this guide will help you
through it.

General Hints
Investgate general objects. (Go up to them and press enter) You'll get
little interesting comments or hints to things or get things you need for
puzzles or other game events.

Read the Manual and FAQ for other Hints/Tips.

===============================================================================

###############################################################################
################################# ACT I: ##################################
###############################################################################

What do you do with dungeon key in the start?
You can only use the key on one door. Go to the level you started at and open
the door under the fire.

How do I get out of the swamp area?
Go towards the lower left corner of the map. You'll see a camp with a few
horses. Talk to one of the horses. Then, go towards the upper right corner
of the map. On the shore between the land and swamp, you'll see tufts of grass
. Collect the grass. Go back to the horse and feed it. Then go to one of
the bags beside the horse to get a sadle. Go the horse again.

How do I get out of the Twilight Capitial Area?
You have to go to the town of emil and complete various miniquests in there.
(Dont buy the hide armour, it's useless for drek.)

How do I get the elder's son to move?
Talk to his mother in the right of the house and get her a blue bird's egg.

How do I find the blue bird's nest in emil?
Walk up to the bluebird at the entrance. It will fly away. Then go to the
elders house. You'll hear a cheep while your walking there. When your at
the elders house walk under the green part to the small tree to the left of
the house. Then walk under the green part of the small tree to the right of
the elders house. The bird will fly north. Just go north from there until
you get to a small locked house. Knock on the door and the bird will fly out.
You have found the nest.

How do i get into the house that contains the bluebird's nest?
You have to get 500 chinkits. First get to the pub, talk to the bar owner.
Buy a 100 chinkit quality drink. He will tell you that it's owned by the
prositute upstairs. Once you talk to the prosititute, you'll find out that
you have to pay her 400 chinkits to get in her house (greedy eh?).

How do I get chinkits in emil?
You can help the herb lady collect herbs. Go to the small locked house in
the middle-left side of town. Knock and she'll let you in. Talk to to her,
then read the white book on the bookshelf. Exit the house and go north over
the barrier. You'll be in the farm area. Just investigate the plants to
get the right ones. With the green plant, look for ones that are brighter
than the rest. With the blue ones, look for ones who's bulbs are lighter than
the rest. For the red berries, look for the pixel large berry thats brighter
than the rest of the other ones (hard to see). With the brown plants, look
for the darker plant. (Almost camoflauged.) Make sure to go through the
destroyed plants to get the other batch of plants on the other side.

But even when you get the lady all the herbs she needs, you'll find out you'll only
get about 240-300 chinkits. I got really sick of playing hunt the pixel, so I
hacked the save game and modified the amount of the chinkits I had.
(See appendix)

If you cannot change the save game for some reason you can try a few other
things. The man with the sick daugter (in emil) and maybe a few other "secret"
and "side-quest" things (which I have no idea how to activate) could get you
some money. Don't try to solve the wolf problem, you solve that later on.

Now What?
Go to the elder's wife, give her the egg, talk to the elder, go to the pub
and order a $100 "Quality". Then go north to the outpost and try to enter.
Before you do although, I'd suggest you try to level your self up to level 2,
and buy as many yellow potions as you can. (get two antitoxins too) You can
try training in the cave at the upper right corner of the map. Theres are a
pair of people there who have a healing point, allowing you to fight wolves and
then get healed up again. Try to get the best equipment that you can. Do not
buy the hide vest, nobody can equip it.

How do I light up a cave?
Get a torch, It lasts for the entire duration that you are in a cave area.

How do I get some bomb ingridients (in the fort)?
Go to the bar for the alchohol, go into the maids room for the dust and some
money, go to the place where there are training dummies for wood chips and then
go to the bag inside the bar. You put the items in the bag by selecting them
in your invetory when your infront of it.

How do I get to the second floor?
You have to beat the sentry in the room infront of the room with the training
dummies. Check in the dressor for the dungeon key. Use the dungeon key on the
door to the very top of the area.

How do I get through the 1st sleeping guard maze?
This one is one of trial and error. It's not too too hard. You can figure it
out. One tip is that the large potted plants act like barriers to a guard on
the other side.

2nd Guard Maze?
Sorry, Didn't go through to see if there is anything. Maybe there is some
valuable things in there, or the game prevents you from going in.

Do the lockers have anything?
The upper left cluster, locker #4 has a white potion. The lower right cluster,
2 from the left edge has a yellow potion.

###############################################################################
################################# ACT II: #################################
###############################################################################

How do I solve the block puzzle in the Cruxen Mines?
See the Accompying Images for the Solution. If you cannot get the images, the
goal is to get the blocks inbetween the gaps. The blocks must be of the same
colour as the the two platforms on the upper level. The green blocks and the
blue blocks do not interact with each other in the puzzle. You will have to
use multiple blocks to create a platform for all but one of the gaps. You can use
the other blocks as barriers to the other blocks.

Where is the old lady that sells the desert masks?
No Idea.

Whats the deal the big red tower?
No Idea. By the crows infront of it, I guess they're hinting its some sort of
Evil Ominous Place(tm).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------$$$$ Appendix $$$$-------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Get a hex editor, note what is the exact value of chinkits you have for your
save slot. Convert the value to hex and then search for the hex value in your
save file (game*.dds, with the * charecter being your save slot number) and
then modify the value (and ajacient values going forward) to get more/less
chinkits. This method also works with exp and probably all the other number
based stats. (Chintinks are at 0x2308 and Drek's Exp is at 0x0E5C)

If you don't know how to use hex editors, the hex number system and other such
things, search (http://www.google.com/) for hex editor tutorials and such.
Hopefully you'll learn how.

Hmm, I should've stored the experience points and other important stats as number offsets or something, so it wouldn't be so easy to find in hex, eh?

Right before you invade the outpost, you do NOT need to pay the bartender 100 chitiks again. He gives you tips and useful advice whenever you pay the money, but it is not necessary in most cases. Only for the prostitute in Act 1, and to find out information from the second bartender in Act 2.

The sleeping guard's quarters are not trial and error. Well, it's not chance, if that's what you mean. You can see which way the guards are facing and must avoid those directions. The second room has two pieces of iron armor that complement the two pieces you can get in the first room. A lot of people say this game is hard, but if you keep stocked on the latest armor it'll be easier. In particular, without these it'll be harder to defeat Officer Demarkis (the boss), and get through Hyde Cave.

You *CAN* save the sick girl in Emil, but you need to look for a pey plant. Hmm, the wolves ate all the pey plants in town. Where might be fortified enough that the wolves couldn't get in to?

Posted on 2004-05-05 19:11:06

Gayo

I like how the walkthrough alternately refers to chitiks as "chinkits" and "chintinks."

BTW, the tower is a later plot thing, and the mask woman is outside the border of that town place. Whatever it's called.

"The sleeping guard's quarters are not trial and error"

It's basically me saying figure it out yourself, cause it's not that difficult and I don't feel like telling the reader how to get through it because it's obtuse to do through text.

Thanks for the other tips everyone.

The hardest hidden thing in FF9 was probably the Chocobo Digging using those Chocographs...

You've got to be kidding. What about the secret code you enter at the end-game screen to play Blackjack?
