I agree with most of what you say, although I don't see the problem you have with the music... that was one of the best things about PSIII! And there may have been some rather bizarre enemies (some of the felmale looking ones I'm
sure were scanned in from porn mags and altered to look like cyborgs or whatever... I mean... look...)
But the overall the battle system was 10 times better than the PSII one, which smelled big time. PSIII had faults, but also had an underlying coolness about it which is difficult to pin down.
But I probably think that because it's the game that got me into RPGS too. Before that, RPGs to me were annoying slow things that my brother played in order to stop me playing Sonic the Hedgehog, so I'm biased. But PSIII isn't the black sheep, it's the grey one. PSO is a travesty of awfulness and much more deserving of the title of black sheep. Even though it's not a bad game in itself, it's got nothing at all to do with the PS series, has zero storyline, and doesn't deserve to bear the name. And PSO Card? I join you in your sobbing.
