An old file I still have on my harddisk of old. Naflign_the_musk_cat of the old Naflign's Battle Arena was working on making a clone of the PS4 battle system.

He got pretty close but quit the scene(shortly after I followed). He never released it due to it being very unfinished(had the basic menu components in place, no battle damage yet, however).

He gave it to me(I was working on my never released/finished game at the time) on #verge. I think I corrected a few sytax errors causing a couple of the crashes, but it was left widely untouched.

I think I gave it to you, vec, some time ago along with nexus quest but since I didn't see it in the files section, I dug it up again:)

Very good potential Phantasy Star 4 battle clone for v1(DOS, although I included the winverge exe file)

and yes, there are more typos in the description then in an late 80's+early 90's Square game, live with it:P

And thanks for the file!

Last I saw of Naflign, he was in the emulation scene doing ROM translations.

He translated Phantasy Star Gaiden, and I think he did a Phantasy Star II retranslation.

He did indeed. And...

Here it is

Phantasy Star IV is still the best 16-bit RPG ever.

DISPUTE ME AT YOUR PERIL! .. I have forum-op powers! .. yeah.

Vecna, those are the truest words ever spoken by any human being. Ever. It is not possible to dispute it.

Need this become a civil war between the triumvirate? You know my stance on this issue.

RAISE NOT MY IRE!

I liked the first one because FP persp. in a 8 bit console is just plain cool:)

I liked the story of the second one, the concept(but not much else) of the third one and I loved the fourth one...

I got PSCollection on the GBA...and THEY DIDN'T INCLUDE IV!!

WHY, SEGA, WHY!?!

Phantasy Star III was horrid, to say the least. It was a step down from Phantasy Star II.

Grue: is that ire in your pants, or are you just happy to see me? :D

I just find it funny that PS1 had the better fight graphics until PS4 AND is the only PS with save-anywhere ability

Phantasy Star III wasn't horrid. It was simply different, and superior to PSII in many, many ways. It was and is and always will be marvellous. :p

Gayo

Naflign was mildly demented, though. He seriously planned to do a verge RPG mixing PS1 graphics with PS4 graphics. That's like Frankenstein-level bad.

Who's the third Triumvir? Tat?

PROS:
The story was sweet, the concept of multigenerations was nice. The town graphics were very detailed. The concept of situation specific battle music was a cool idea(more on this in cons)

CONS:
The Battles graphics were nasty and reeked of NES graphics(especially considering PS1 had full landscapes...ps2 may have cheaped out on that one too but at least it didn't look as cheap).

The music was N-A-S-T-Y and looped every two seconds(the dungeon and shrine music was enough to drive you mad).

The battle music, while cool in concept, would mesh together to create utter chaos and, like all other music, sounded AWEFUL. They even stopped using the Sprite attack animations! And some of the monsters were very odd(moustache bearing statue in the buff waving it's finger at you for one). While I will admit DarkForce did look cool.

And, last but not least, who builds castles like those!?! The castles looked identical to Final Fantasy...1! From the NES DAYS.

Now PS3 got me into contemporary RPGs, so the nostalgia is great and all...but as a PS title, it deserved it's "black sheep" title.

And now we have PSO CARD..........*sob*

And thus endeth my editorial:)

The PSO series is way overrated. They need to start making real Phantasy Star games again ;)

Dear god yes.

Phantasy Star V: The beginning of the next millenium ;D
