I'm still working on it, hehe. For the moment, it's taking an EXTREME amount of data entry. After editing all 828 sprites (damn you magenta background), I didn't want to see another pokemon for a day or two. :D

I really need some overworld sprites, if anyone has some good ones laying around (that are consistant). The tile art is coming around nicely... except the problems with maped3 are preventing me from easily making maps with them (no brushes yet, fill map crash). We'll see how it goes with maped3 as it's completed, though I might release a demo soon on a smaller map if I can find some good overworld sprites.

I hope you don't use the same battle system found in every pokemon ever. You'd think by now they would have used the advance hardware to improve the gameplay. But that's Nintendo for you! All talk, no innovation. Just like Apple.

Technically, the maker of the pokemon games was GameFreak, not Nintendo; they are just the publisher.

I'm kind of stuck with regards to the battle system. A part of me sincerely wants to keep it the same, just with maybe a spiffier, cleaned up interface. The other part, a barely audible whisper, wants to do something extreme with the battle system. So unless anybody has any idea what they would DO with the battle system, I'm leaning towards a simple clean up/ prettyfication of the battle system. With all the other things I have planned, it might not even seem like the same battle system... but it is. :D

Think AI partners for 2vs2 battles. :D

Technically Nintendo is incredibly innovative as well ;)

2v2! That would be heaven if you allowed for coop play :D

You know, coop play would actually be something cool to implement, I'll have to think about it. Probably player 1 would control the main character on the map, dragging the second player along, but perhaps player 2 could be doing something very useful at the same time, ala Mario Kart Double Dash. I have no idea what though...

BLAST FROM THE PAST

2 vs 2!

Yes. 2vs2 Pokemon. Fancy that.

Mmmhmm...
They have that by the way. Buut...

naah, sounds a bit too crazy...

Oh what the hell. I was thinking Net Support for 4 simultaneous players in 2 vs 2.

Which, by the way, exists already in recent pokemon games. (not 4 players, but 2 vs 2.)

Well, that was the point. I was implying that Nintendo stole Blue Zodiakos's idea. At the time of this thread (over a year ago) there was no 2 vs 2 Pokemon.

Oh,... it's over a year ago...

Wow.

It's kinda weird that the first post I see when coming back to the verge-rpg page after over a year of absense is... my old pokemon post! O.O

I was going to make a seperate post apologizing to several people for being gone so long, and being force to abandon my internet server for a long while (I had to move under some pretty quick circumstances), but not many people knew me anyways, I suspect, so there isn't much point.

It's weird knowing the stuff I know now - I've been going to college for over a year now studying compute science, and all the stuff I thought I knew when I was making stuff here last time, compared to the stuff I know now. I'm no longer horrible at art, for example - I know my way around photoshop pretty damn well, and that was a huge stopping point for some of the things I wanted to do here, as well as other private projects. I've gotten much better at programming too, because of college, and since I've been making quite a bit of money playing a game called Second Life, where I script for money while I'm going through college. I'm also a bit older, my interests have changed slightly, and I'm in a relationship. Weird how things can turn around so quickly in just a year or so.

My judgement tells me it's probably not a good idea at all to persue this kind of game anymore, or any other type of game 'sequel'. Those of you who told me that in the beginning, I salute you, hehe. I've learned alot since then about various copyright law and such, as well as the importance of coming up with your own ideas. I know it's frustrating sometimes to see a game like Pokemon, for example, and wish that lots of things were implemented completely differently. Gah... if only the world worked in ways it doesn't. :D

I'm still interested in making games though, which is why I'm going to college for that very thing. My mistake last time was making an idea, coming up with a prototype quickly, and not thinking about the design problems that would crop up later, or not thinking about usability concerns for people that wanted to use my library (my particle library comes to mind). So I'm not going to announce anything yet that I'd like to do, even though I already have quite a few ideas of things that I WANT to do.

I'm going to think about it for a tiny bit; I really want to remake my old particle library using all the stuff that I know now, to make it easy to implement into any game with an absolute minimum of effort. It's hard for me not to get excited about my own projects like that, but I think that I should be a little more cautious from now on about jumping the gun and announcing things before I have a solid prototype or plan, at the very least.

Might I suggest that you derive the experience from the level of the trainer? That way, you retain the need to battle people for experience, but do away with the need to individually level up your pokemon.

edit:
aaaaand read the final post. D'oh. Way to be a little late to the party.
