umm...hi? i'm new here, so go ahead and get the "n00b" dance out of your system. i just thought i'd drop a note to say "yo, new people are actually looking at your site".

Rocktastic.

Sadly, the site isn't very newbie-friendly at the moment... No real instruction on where to go first or what to do when you're stuck...

...sorry about that. Will change soon, honest!

What's happening in yours rpgking, people on balloons getting attacked by lightning clouds & trying to hit red balls?

Well, if you've ever played Balloon Fight on the NES, you know what to expect with my game :)

BTW, cactus hat man looks interesting :P

Balloon fight! :O
I've been thinking about making some multiplayer party game, kind of like Mario Party and Fusion Frenzy. But I've been thinking a lot of things. And I'm too busy.
Who knows when anything will happen. ;.;

Hah Gayo.

I'm happy with the current community. If we have a solid base of veterans to produce good stuff, we can attract some good new comers. And there are plenty of musicians and artists here (like me :P). If anyone needs artists or musicians, all you've gotta do is ask I'm sure. I'd be willing to bet there's some shady creative types waiting around here.

Well, which facet of gamemaking would you like to dig into? Mapmaking in v3 is still in private development, but there should be a public release sometime soon (I believe most of dev is happy with it's current state).

If you want to start basic scripting, v3 can accomodate that, but it's admittedly not so fulfilling without having little guys running around on a map doing stuff.

Also...how the heck do you pronounce your name? ;_;

As long as Verge 3 is a lot more user-friendly and it allows non-coders to make something, then we'll probably see the community pick up. If it has the ease of use of Verge 1 with a lot more features, the scene will definitely get better. I think Vecna and crew are keeping in mind that not everyone can program well, so they're definitely taking steps towards attracting artists and the such through ease of use.

Yes. Probably one of the biggest focuses with V3 is to target the artist... To make VERGE3 "artist friendly", so to speak. This way we get people in here who can make pretties, and at the same time expand our borders. The graphics API reflects this, and the tools do as well.

Just curious, why is that one of the biggest focuses?

Art is probably the easiest thing to come by with many sources to take it from if you can't draw your own, and someone can always make a program like they did for rpgmaker that pretty much makes the chrs for you :)

In the higher resolutions v3 supports even really crappy art can look good if it's used slightly well.. (assuming someone isn't on a huge monitor of course)

v3 question while I'm here : will maped have the import tiles from another vsp/picture feature that the vsp editor in v2 had?

The reason we aim to please artists is because V2 really only worked for people who had some coding abilities. It was very programmer oriented. While we're maintaining that, the goal is to broaden our horizons by reaching out to the artist. .... And VERGE art isn't so easy to come by. You can skimp on it, but a lot of people are looking to be original.

In response to your import question: Yes. Currently it has an import dialog that lets you pick the type of tiles you want to import (color tiles or monochrome obstruction tiles), whether or not your source image has padding, and where to get the tiles from. The source can be either an image, another vsp, or the windows clipboard. So you can copy pixel data out of paint shop pro, for example, and import that in as tiles.

Furthermore, you can export to an image, or the clipboard. With or without padding, as you see fit.

Aye, non-original art is lame. Its definately a good idea to make everything artist friendly. After all, its it not coder-friendly, at least the coders can h4x the program to make it coder-friendly.

Just curious, why is that one of the biggest focuses?

v1 was popular because it was relativly easy for anyone to put together a demo.

v2 had a more complete scripting language, but lacked the documentation v1 had, as well as several other features.

v3 has the most complete language to date of the VERGE engines, and has already proven to be a quicker development tool for those with some mad programming skills than earlier versions. However, the real goal is to allow people to make games just as easily as they did in ye olde days... we'll be testing that out in the next few days. :)

Ah, good :)

I liked that v1 was so easy to use (I r programming n00b), and glad to hear about the tile features. The copy from clipboard will save a lot of time!

Non-original art isn't necessarily lame, just bad use, badly drawn or constantly used stuff is (and ripped art that doesn't fit a game of course). I'll help out in that respect a bit when v3 is released, hopefully everyone won't mostly be using slightly edited versions of hahn01.vsp again :)
