Hey guys..
I was thinking, the Verge Community now is pretty small, and most of you guys are coders. There are actually very little artists and musicians here.. It's actually a pretty barebone community. In a loserish kind of way, I miss those old vaporware days where we saw artists showing off bullcrap shit that never took off.
At least we had something to look forward to.
So, the.. uh.. hmm.. Verge Committee (if of any of the sort :P), those who're coding V3 and running the site and such.. Chairman Vecna, Jester Mcgrue.. and crew.. :P Do you guys have any solid plans to revive the community? Or are you just going to wait until V3 gets released before trying to rope in newbies?
Just wondering.. because everything seems to be in a kind of limbo.. Posts in the GenDisc are always about technical questions and stuff. Don't see any real 'life' here..

'Jester'?
What exactly do you want? Active advertisement? "Hey, come use VERGE!!!"?
If we build it, they will come. Or not. Who cares... as long as the people who do want to use it like it and make some awesome crap with it.
VERGE: It's all about the awesome crap.

i believe when v3 kicks off it will start an avalanche of new users and posts. a new era. v3 will kick rpgmaker's ass. I will then come up with an awseome game, you wait!

At any rate, Arias, I didn't spend 6 weeks building this new site from scratch just to have nothing come of it.
vecna, Hahn, and I have been plugging away at the new packin, and Tatsumi and Zero have been getting maped3 into mightyfine shape. The progress that's been passed around behind the scenes is promising, and the amount of demos that have already come out of the community for a beta alpha engine with no public documentation is staggering.
It's been quiet for the last few days, yes, but when you compare the activity of the last month with the activity of the last few years... well... I daresay we're heading in the direction of the ancient days of awesome.

(also, whomever did that other post, could you relogin and reply here? I know you're someone whom I recovered an account for due to the nature of the error, however I didn't keep records of the new->old ID xfers. Bad me.)

So long as v3 kicks the proverbial and the packin serves as a reasonable introduction into the ins and outs of VC then would-be game makers will flock in the hundreds.
And I actually consider myself as more of a graphical artist than a programmer, although I'm fairly reasonable at both (on a good day).

Certainly, though, once V3 is ready for public consumption, then the Verge Community Powers that Be would no doubt advertise to other game making sites to make sure the rest of the RPG and game-making world knows that Verge is back in business with a new engine and a new 'tude.
V3: New engine, new world, new 'tude
Or something.

arias, of corse there's not many artist or musicians or really newbs for that matter. why would they be here? theres nothing for them, yet! I dont know if you noticed but before v3 was announced to be revived, there was NO ONE. but now that there's a v3 you can start coding on a little out there... there's coders! once theres maps and portraits n stuff to be made, we we see a lot more artists.

"I miss those old vaporware days where we saw artists showing off bullcrap shit that never took off.

Games that never get anywhere near finished and just a few pretty screenshots? :)
It'd be silly to be advertising v3 right now, most people who don't know how to code will just look at the verge 2 & verge 3 stuff & get their heads hurt. Much better to wait for the packin in my opinion..
I'm one of those people with a hurt head, owie. and yeah, I know there's documentation for all the v2 stuff, but v3 is the new thing, and there isn't any for it at all yet. Give them time, they'll make the verge community come back to life, but a few screenshots every now and then of something new/interesting to keep us non-coders happy wouldn't hurt :)
There's more than a few decent musicians and artists around, you just don't see people posting stuff because there usually isn't anything to post. Some people are waiting for the next version before doing something cool.. made that mistake before, not doing it again.
Oh mcgrue, could you up the limit on files to 8mb or so? I was just going to upload Phage (the v1 frog game!) after not seeing it in the directory, but it's a bit higher than 5.12 mb :|

Yeah I do realise the various reasons why we don't have so much newbies around, especially considering that verge3 isn't out yet. :P.. I'm just wanting to know the plans for Verge and the community, if there were any. As well as to hear some comments from you guys about roping in newbies.. ^_^;;
Anyways, I do appreciate the efforts of the Verge "Committee" (Mcgrue, consider 'jester' a term of.. affection), and I may not understand most.. or.. erm.. ANY of the technicalities you guys always seem to go through on the GenDisc board, but I roughly get the idea of the various genres that can be accomplished with V3..
Kind of exciting to see the recent raycasting demo, and the screenshots of the sim-city style thingy.. :D

Well, the 'plan' in loose terms is to recreate the lack-of-a-plan goodness that verge 1 had. >:D
Also, is it screenshot posting day? Why wasn't I informed?
Here's my contribution:

Indeed, one must realize that creating hype (that IS what is being suggested, is it not?) for V3 could very well have the opposite effect of what is intended. Sure, the hits for the main page would soar, in the short term, and loads of people new to verge would poar in, in the short term... But the damage to the community could be irrepairable. People get their hopes up when things like this come along. Who wouldn't if you saw a post like "FREE RPG MAKER Make the best games in 32-bit color! Much better than RPGMaker2003!"?
I think that things right now are EXACTLY as they should be. If V3 lives up to it's potential, the hype will create itself, except it will no longer be called hype - it will be called praise.

I'm a firm believer in "if you build it, they will come", but I will not stop there. When vecna decides the engine is globally deployable, and I'm comfortable with the tools equally, and grue is happy with the website, and everyone else helping with dev is pleased, I will personally bombard several news sites / magazines. That is the mission plan.

Astrad is the official title which if you mangle Latin translates to "Saga of the Stars".
And, er... maybe? ;)

I guess today is screenshot posting day :)
What's happening in yours rpgking, people on balloons getting attacked by lightning clouds & trying to hit red balls?
Just put up a few quick ones of my own on angelfire, not really worth going to though unless you're extremely bored.

Nice. Looks clean and awesome. Like Earthbound, yet not.
Clearly coding Sully's backend has hurt my big grey thinkyfish.

Yeah, Grue has to spend much more than 6 weeks on a Verge project for nothing to come of it!
