compared to some other boards i've seen, i think they're really nice oldies.

I count myself lucky I'm not a newbie. Though I wouldn't call myself an oldie.

Poor Genesis Revelations. :D They put so much work into making all those entities move in the right direction in their first alpha, I think their heads all exploded. I wonder if that file is available here...
-edit OMG it is! It's the first revelations demo! Pity I can't get the winv1 exe from Sully to work with it. It would be nice if someone could find the actual distribution for WinV1. :D

Saga of the Stars! Hell yes! Me and Grue were talking about that last night on IRC! Man, and fantasy realms... the memories...
You're right, we do need more newbies, so I can recruit them and use them as slave labor for my evil whims...

In the last 4 years, I've e-mailed mcgrue and posted messages on the boards on various occassions to ask him about the Saga of the Stars. It always ended in a mysterious, vague, answer that alluded to "It's for me to know and for you to find out."
Wtf happened to SotS? Argh.. Grue and his milk penises..

You are not ready.
The avalanche has already started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote.
...or something. The Astrad is not in active development at this moment. I had to halt it for this website's development, and for implementing the packin.

I'm glad so many of y'all are tolerant of newbies, 'cause I'm hanging out on the bottom rung. I just wanted to ask(and I'm certain it says somewhere I'm not bright enough to find), exactly what degree of programming experience would I need in order to use these engines? And which version, if any, would you recommend for an absolute beginner? By the way, I am available for slave labor, but only for strictly wicked purposes. That's my policy, if you don't like it, please don't beat me.

Well, I'd be lying if I said it was really easy to pick up. I don't think programming experience is ABSOLUTELY necessary, but it helps (oddly enough, it seems to me that it is more useful to have BASIC or other procedural laguage experience than C++). At this EXACT moment, Verge 1 is arguably the easiest version to make things with if you don't want to do heavy programming, but things are in the works for a library that will allow verge 3 to operate similarly to verge 1. When that comes out, Verge 3 would easily be the better choice, simply because it is newer, actively developed, and has infinitely more features.
To answer your question more directly: You will almost certainly need to program something at some point if you are making a game with verge, regardless of which version you use. The programming language that Verge uses is called VC, and it is unique to verge, although it is similar (at least in syntax) to c, and somewhat simpler. If you don't really want to do fancy stuff, like making your own battle system, you could get away with using one someone else has made, and only programing really simple things like events, music changes, etc.

I pretty much learned how to program from verge 1. I went into it with some very, very basic knowledge of C, and that was it.
I'd advise to stick around and wait for the v3 packin. Hahn's cooking up an absolute newbie level document akin to the one he made in v1.

(Same unimportant NPC from above here)
Thanks for the info. I've got a few more things I'd like to talk about, maybe more directly with someone who has experienced. If anybody has AOL or AIM, would you be so kind as to IM me at TheToySoldier or Coyoteswereblue? I'd truly appreciate it!

I use to be around when verge 1 was just comming out I wanted to use a different editor than rpgmaker 95 but when i started to ask questions about hot to get the program running on my computer and when I asked question in the #verge channel I almost always got spammed off so i left the verge community. I just happened to come accross the sight again and see that it going to have high color support and such so I thought I give it a try again. I just hope this time when I start asking questions I dont get treated the same way I was when I first found the verge comunity.

I bet you'll get along fine. Just make sure to read all the documents (when you have a question or problem) you can get your hands on to avoid asking questions that provoke some of the oldbies in a fiery rage. Make sure that your questions and problems are descriptive and relevant, as it will encourage people to be more willing to help.
