I didn't mean to bump Grue's post so soon after it went up, but well, this is pretty important so I guess he'll just have to get over it! Those of you who followed aen's (aka Chuck) LiveJournal might have noticed that he was complaining about having some infection and "demonic headaches". Well it turns out it was a bit more than that, on Tuesday he was taken to the hospital. My information is a bit sketchy and second hand, but basically he has some internal bleeding problems, and his blood isn't clotting and they haven't really figured out why yet (as of Thursday morning which is the most recent information I have). I'm told he's in a lot of pain but doesn't seem to be in immediate danger of dying, which is more than we knew at first. They were also concerned he might fall into a coma, which he hasn't done. But he is still in intensive care and still in a pretty serious condition. They say he really shouldn't have been able to walk or talk when they brought him in, but he's a stubborn fella in that way.

To those of you who are new to the community and don't really know who aen is, he's an awesome dude who did tons of stuff with V2, and more recently is the author of maped2w, psd2map, ttf2fnt, and the temporarily ill-fated jwinmaped. He is also rediculously good at Q3, and when I say rediculously good, I'm not kidding around. And he has a very unique and awesome sense of humor.

So... yeah. Thought you all might like to know. I'll keep you updated as I get more information. Also, thanks to loretian for basically being our liason with Chuck's family. If ya'll are the praying sort, I guess that might be a good thing to do. Elsewise, lets hope for the best.

FUCK.

OK, I think I've said all that I can say on the matter for the time being.

Pardon my swearing.

Wow...that's really terrible.

Get well soon Aen. Real soon. I'm rootin for you.

Crap. If any topic deserves to bump Grue's post so soon after it went up, it's this one. Aen is one of the most important figures in the Verge community. If I remember right, he even sort of replaced vecna as the main coder for verge at one point, or something like that.

Of vergers, only perhaps Lore knows aen better than I. In 2001 he and I lived together for half a year during the great Minnesota convergence.

I can honestly say that there is no one less deserving of a seemingly random and mortal ill than Aen*. He is a man humble in character, sharp of wits, and wise beyond his years. Beyond that, he's the most consistant and reliable developer here, with all of the applications under his belt that vecna mentioned, as well as always being helpful with teaching those who ask for help.

Aen rocks. And I would come to blows with any man who says otherwise, even if I were sober.

* in fairness, there are one or two more people I know tied for this level of not-deservingness. FYI, vecna and myself are not in this number: we are horrible bastards who have earned god's wrath. ;)

At the risk of understating it by quite a bit...

Wow, that's pretty shitty.

Why do these things have to happen to good people? I really hope aen gets well, because he's a really nice guy(always helpful and responsive to questions) and he was honestly one of my main influences in learning programming due to his professional coding style and his ability to pull off practically anything he took a shot at.

My prayers go out to aen and his family. Get well soon aen!

Damn man... I remember when Aen tried to help me learn c++ and even 'loaned' me a copy of borland c++. Such a badass does not deserve this.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Get well soon, Aen!

Christ, poor Aen. I really hope he gets better soon: his tutorials, utils and general funkiness rock and I hope he continues to rock for a conceivably long time.

As for rediculously good at quake, I once played the master for two hours straight of instagib on the same level. Let me say this, he plays on an entirely different level. The final score was a couple hundred to negative something.

Can you ask Lore to get us an address to send cards and stuff to? I think it would be amazing if some of us who have never met him in person send him love, the old fashioned way.

I think we could arrange an address...
