Actually one of my favorite songs is the GNR rendition of knocking on heavens door :D
That and Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah because it makes me sad for some reason.

Iron Maiden has never written any songs near the level of the best Gn'R songs. In a strictly metal sense, you're right, but Iron Maiden doesn't come close as far as songwriting - and songwriting is important. Also, Axl is a better vocalist than whoever they have.

Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah is awesome! The new Gn'R has a new version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door that isn't a complete misinterpretation of the song like the famous Gn'R version (as good as it is)

Songwriting is indeed important, which is why Iron Maiden have churned out 5-star albums again and again since the early 80's, and GNR have only ever produced one decent record. Also, 'whoever they have' is Bruce Dickinson, who is widely regarded (though don't ask me who by) as an exceptional vocalist.
But I suppose it all comes down in the end to a matter of personal taste.
Though having said that, GNR do suck.
