Now that Maped3 is out making the rounds to gasps of awe and wonder and sometimes expletives, this thread has been created for user feedback with bugs, suggestions, or questions.

Please refrain from "Maped3 r0x0rz!!!!!" We know you're thinking it.

So to start: Things you may not know-

Ctrl+Click is the eyedropper function. Try it. You'll like it.

From the readme:
"The bottom left [tool] is the copy/paste tool. To use it, select this tool and hold down the shift button, drag a rectangle, and release to copy a single-layer region. Then click to paste the region.

To use multi-layer copy (will copy all layers including obstructions and zones), hold CTRL+SHIFT to copy, and CTRL+CLICK to paste."

The layers work inverted to that of Photoshop or Paintshop.
The topmost tile layer is the first to be rendered, and therefore the bottom-most layer in maped will show up on top. You'll get used to it.

You can create an image in your favorite image editor then select an area (in multiples of 16 to be accurate) copy, hop into maped3 goto Vsp/Import/from: Clipboard and viola, insta-tiles. This is a handy workaround for the MIA Tiled.

That should get you up and running.

Now for some feature suggestions that are floating around:

NOTE: These aren't current features, so don't post saying they don't work ;D

Old School tile selection hotkeys:
A,S for primary
Z, X for secondary.

Middle Mouse-Click to Pan around the map.

Floating toolbars.

VSP Animations.

Your turn.

MAPED BUGS STATUS
-------------------------
I will update this with changes.

bug in which mousewheel explodes on small VSPs (fixed)

bug in which import crashes on some operations (no luck so
far)

bug in which toggling animations a lot of times can cause the app to hang without an exception (no idea on that one, either)

new maps dont have an entities layer (fixed)

Bugs that are shown as fixed will be fixed in the next release (which should be very soon. there's some vital shortcomings)

RageCage

I already posted this before in the release thread but this is probably a better place.

I desperately need a way of making an image into a map without having to go through and put each tile into the map. either that or make the tile size user defined ^_^

the problem is my v3 game is in 1024x768 and the maps will be just a big image probably. The way the maped is working right now, I'd have to individually place 6912 tiles manualy for a somewhat small map.

Tatzen

Import Image as Layer will be added. Different sized tiles isn't something we're interested in for now.

Kildorf

I had some issues last night when trying to save maps (as in, it wouldn't work at all, crashing with an "Index is outside bounds of the array." Function trace is :

System.IndexOutOfRangeException: Index was outside the bounds of the array.
at ZLIB.Encode(Byte[] src)
at winmaped2.InputOutput.WriteVsp(FileInfo fi, Vsp24 vsp)
at winmaped2.MainWindow.SaveMap(Map m, Boolean ForcePrompt)
at winmaped2.MainWindow.miSaveAs_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e)
at System.Windows.Forms.MenuItem.OnClick(EventArgs e)
... (before this was lots of System.Windows menu command objects)

Anyway, I seem to have narrowed it down to only crashing when I try to save a map with no obstructions defined. Now that I've figured that out, it's sort of silly that I found it, what with it offering to auto generate obstructions for you, but anyway.

When this error happens, you can "Continue" just fine, but no .map file is written, but a .vsp file is written... but I've had no luck actually loading that .vsp file in the future.

Hope that helps.

This isn't a bug, but I would suggest having a little description of each tool when you hover over it long enough. It took forever to figure out what all those damn tools did!

Minor probl3m. Maped Doest open up for me at all. Well it does sort of, When I ctrl-alt-del it shows that the process is running, but there are no windows up or anything visual happening.

Also I'm Running Windows XP

-edit

If I let the program run for about a minute then This error message pops up

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled

Process id=0xcb0 (3248), Thread id=0x1dc

thats probably no help tho.

When trying to import a graphics file as a tileset, I get an error. I don't seem to be the only one, judging from what I'm reading here but if the following is any help (gleaned from the "Details" box) then so much the better:

Currently, I'm pasting tilesets in via the clipboard. I've tried importing PNGs and BMPs and got this. Not sure about PCX or GIF. I'll take a look when I can.

Oh, and I'm running XP Professional, if that helps narrow anything down.

A PackEd issue. I tried opening it, but as soon as it loaded in, this came up:

I encountered a weird error today, I did a multi-layer copy from one map to another and did the paste twice. When I did this the obstructions from the first paste would no longer show up in my view but they would still block me in game. I ended up making a box of non-obstructions and filled the entire map to get rid of them, because I couldnt see them in maped to delete them.

[edit]
Also, when you run the map from maped it should save, so that you actually get the map that you are looking at and also protects you from funky map code.

Technetium

new maps dont have an entities layer (fixed)

Would it be possible to also have it automatically add an entities layer to any maps it loads that don't have one (such as maps we've been working on with the current release), so we don't have to start them over? That would kick lots of ass.

Gahaha. My obsessive compulsive clicking (in the map editor itself on the obstruction layer) produced this error:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

That would be the mousewheel bug thats fixed in the next release

Alright excellent. I do so much clicking that I've manged to find a crash bug in windows solitaire (seriously).

Oh and also, I'm not sure what I did, but when I was first messing around with Maped, the two boxes that display which tiles you have currently selected got all bugged up and were displaying part of other windows. I'll try to do it again it when I get home.

Well, it appears that there isn't a method to delete a tile from the VSP.
That'd be handy.

Also a shortcut like ctrl+I or ctrl+r (from Flash functionality)
to pull up the import dialogue box would be handy, since that's really the only way of incorporating artwork, at the moment.

It would be nice if Maped3 carried over view parameters from map to map, so that if you have entities and obstructions hidden on one map, they'd be hidden when you opened a new map or re-opened the current one.

Also, while working on grass tiles, I had the idea for a seed tile function, which would randomly lay down tiles from a selected sequence. For instance, you'd create 4/5 different grass tiles which are patternable, lay down the first from the series where the grass should be, then pull up the seed dialogue box which would let you specify the paremeters like the target tile, and VSP tiles to seed from, and Maped would randomly replace the original single tile with one from the seed stable. Or perhaps you could set up a 'seed' tile, say tile number 69, specify which tiles to seed from, and whenever you laid that tile, it would dynamically choose from its seed stable.

You know.

All these update suggestions looks like they would be cool to implement, but I think it would be helpful to the community if a partially-updated maped was released sooner, say with at least the missing-entity-layer bug fixed so that people can get back to work on their HoV games. It's hard to test stuff when you player-character is invisible. ;)

Just a suggestion.
