Iron Maiden rock, Adrian Smith miles better than that Slash bloke, and Steve Harris has written at least 10 excellent songs since 1979

I can't tell if you're serious or not, but every rock n' roll bone in my body take serious offense to such a statement, even if it was uttered in preadolescent humor.

Do not joke about Axl or Slash or Guns N' Roses or the most perfect music ever created in this wonderful world, or I will freak on you and not be held responsible for my actions. They haven't written a single bad song, ever; every single one of their songs is better than the ones written before and after them. I will die before I compromise all that I know and hold to be true and righteous before allowing myself to be an accomplice in this blasphemy by doing nothing, as all evil and forsaken men do.

Edit: And Iron Maiden do indeed rock but 1) I'm not European and 2) They get old. My heart will always have a special place for Run to the Hills though, as stupid as the lyrics are.

I wasn't being serious. Both of Iron Maiden's guitarists, Adrian Smith and Dave Murray, cannot be beat for sheer ability. But then neither can Slash. The difference between Iron Maiden and Guns n' Roses is that Iron Maiden have produced many, many top-quality records, whereas G n' R have never come anywhere near to equalling their debut "Appetite For Destruction" (but the "Use Your Illusion" records come an almost-close second) . As evidenced by their recent Greatest Hits release, the best tracks of which are from said debut. Also the fact that they didn't even write at least two of the songs on their greatest hits speaks volumes. But don't get me wrong, they're still great.

Fair enough, but Adrian Smith and Dave Murray can totally be beat for sheer ability. Not old Gn'R, but tons of guitartists nowadays are way above them. Have you heard any new-Gn'R songs with Buckethead and Robin Finck of NiN? Mark of the Beast not withstanding, which I've never heard, Iron Maiden doesn't come close.

I hear you on the AFD comparison, but I actually think UYI's were superior (at least UYI 2). Sure, it wasn't as accessible, but there's so many amazing songs that are above any "simple" rock song on AFD or that AC/DC or Iron Maiden has ever put out. I love AC/DC and pure rock, but The Beatles, Led Zeppelin etc with evolution of style and music is just so much more cooler and authentic.

As far as the Greatest Hits goes, it's bullshit. Axl, Slash, and Duff all sued to stop it's release. Five of the songs on it are covers, which is retarded, there's many, far greater songs they've written that weren't included on it just because they weren't the ones the record company wanted to promote. Semantics aside, Greatest Hits is really the same as Best Of and it would need to be a two disc set for that. And...... that's what Gn'R Live Era is... if you want to hear all their really good songs, pick that up. The only big one it's missing is Civil War.

Maybe you're right about UYI being better if you listen to it loads of times, but upon hearing Welcome To The Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine, and Paradise City, I for one instantly forget all their other records.

You should get the Beast album. Apart from the first track it's really, really good, and probably their best. And Iron Maiden's greatest hits was crap too, simply because all their best songs were far too long to fit onto it. Their Official Best Ever Song, "Rime Of The Ancient Mariner", being almost 14 minutes long, and hence ignored and it's rightful place given over to some B-side crap. All heavy metal Greatest Hits suck.

I agree with what you say about Led Zeppelin (though I prefer their earlier stuff) and the Beatles (later stuff)being better for actually progressing wheras bands like Iron Maiden sound EXACTLY the same now as they did in the 80's, and probably have the same big haircuts too.

EDIT: Also, I don't have an Iron Maiden fixation or anything, they're just something that Interference mentioned. Blame him. :)

ANOTHER EDIT: Adrian Smith and Dave Murray have to be heard to be believed live, the speed that they can work those guitars is amazing (note: still no fixation).

McGrue, if I'm understanding correctly and you're registering your approval for the guitar god that is Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd, then I have to agree. And if you're not registering your approval for the guitar god Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd, then I'll have to do it:

Dave Gilmour is hereby mentioned as a Exceptional Guitarist Indeed.

Cool, yeah I definitely need to check it out. It's one of those albums that's been on my "planning to buy" list for awhile now.

AFD is great because of all the "other" songs it has on it, but almost every single song on it is fantastic. The final one, Rocket Queen, is where they just begin to reveal their true capabilities, though.

If Gn'R hadn't broken up, their next album in the mid nineties probably would have been industrial (at least, that's where Axl wanted to take it)

If Maiden is ever in town here, I'm definitely gonna check them out. They're not gonna be around that much longer, so I want to see them before it's too late.

Yeah, I'm in agreement on Gilmour too. The only two bands I've ever gotten into with fanboy like intensity are Pink Floyd and Guns N' Roses.

By the way, not only can Buckethead shred and tear it up with the best of them, he's made some of the most beautiful music too. Check out this short song off Colma (sorry for the shitty format, I'm lazy about my ripping)

Aren't Guns 'n Roses still around? Chinese Democracy?
EDIT: Or is that just Axl?

And Rocket Queen was actually my least favourite track on there, though it did grow slightly.

Gilmour:
Comfortably Numb (the 2 minute solo)
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (all of it)

Guns N' Roses is still around, though it's a completely new band, except for Axl, and Dizzy who was from the UYI days.

Their new music is fantastic, the few songs I've heard of it anyway they played live during the new tour.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond used to be my all time favorite song, even when I wasn't into Pink Floyd so much. Now, the only song ever to top it for me is Madagascar, by new Gn'R.

Their new album is called Chinese Democracy and has had release dates since about 2000. That's what the thing in my signature is all about.

Check out Madagascar here

And for more rockin', check out Chinese Democracy here here

Keep in mind these are live cuts, there's no studio versions yet. The solo in Chinese Democracy is simple, but incredibly unique.

Time's solo. Comfortably numb's solo. Gilmour > *.

He's a dick, tho.

And I'm still a Waters fan over a Gilmour fan.

Even tho Waters is a dick too.

Roger Waters is the most self-obsessed man in the world. And can't play bass as well as his numerous awards would make you think. Though some of his tunes were good. Apart from Another Brick in the Wall.

That's what I thought. I just thought that it was kind of imminent. Or isn't it? Big Sur Moon's a weird one... I'm getting Madagascar as we speak.

Well, it's been imminent for the past four years. In Axl's last released statement, he said he hopes to have a release date in a couple of months. This was like maybe two or three weeks ago. We'll see.

Whatever the case, it's going to be one of the biggest rock albums ever, either a complete success or dismal failure, Gn'R hasn't released an album with original material since 1991.

Big Sur Moon is weird, as is most of Buckethead's solo stuff. But he can go from something like that to pure shred to near country stuff - the man is a guitar god along the lines of Steve Vai and Satriani.

Madagascar: I love that song already, and so far I've only downloaded less than a third of it. If the rest of Chinese Democracy is anything like this, then a complete success it will be. I'll buy it, anyway.

And concerning the greatest ever rock tunes named after southern hemisphere countries, Australia by Manic Street Preachers is one of my top three favourite songs ever. If you've never heard it, hear it.

Awesome! Glad you like it. Actually, I think the album will be pretty varied, there's going to be a big variety of songs on it. If you look in that same folder on my account, there's a few others songs you can download.

I've never actually heard the Manic Street Preachers. I know they're pretty awesome, I need to check them out. You don't happen to have any mp3s posted do you?

I've never actually heard the Manic Street Preachers.

Manic Street Preachers were pretty much the best British band of the 90's but never made it in America due to having other bands mess their tours. I think only their first album (Generation Terrorists) was released over there. Which is a shame.
I don't have any mp3's posted as the only webspace I have is Geocities, which I'm sure needs no further elaboration on its terribleness. I could email you it if you like, as it really is worth hearing.

That would be awesome, if you could. loretian@verge-rpg.com. I'll post them on the verge-rpg.com server as a thank you, and then you can just link anyone to it if they want to listen.

As ironic as it may seem, I had a GNR song stuck in my head before I read this part of the thread... ("Knockin on heaven's door")
