Alright. This one's slightly more important and more involved.

We're all very busy with tons of things. I'm coding the packin systems, vecna's polishing up the engine, tat's working on maped, hahn's reaquainting himself with vc to recode the events of the packin and start on the docs, zero's working on much needed rendering fixes, and Toen's... well... er, rapping. But the point is, we've all got a lot of stuff doing right now. And also our 'lives'. ;)

So, this leaves little time for things like, oh... say... repetitive character art. So, here's what we want you guys to do:

For the next two weeks, it'd be hella cool if you guys could make enemy battle sprites for us. The packin will not be using .chr's, but instead will use pcx/gif/png in filmstript format.

We only need a few frames per enemy. The neccesary animations are:

  • Idle animation (at least 2 frames)
  • Attack animation (at least 2 frames, showing what happens when the enemy trys to hit you with it's default attack)
  • Weakened Idle Animation (at least 2 frames, replaces the idle animation when the enemy is low on HP, or has a status ailment)
  • Dead frame (1 frame, shows the defeated enemy)
  • Being hit frame (1 frame, this single frame is shown when someone attacks the enemy.)

There are no real size restrictions, but keep in mind that 16x32 is the size of a human. everything should be in scale with the images at the end of this post.

The only requirement for judging here is that your sprite will go in if we (being hahn and me, for the most part) agree that it fits in with the look and feel of the pre-existing sully art (IE, cartoony and simplistic, black outlines, etc..).

The rewards for contributing sprites to the noble cause of the upcoming pack-in battle system are a forum Avatar (if you don't have it), your name in the credits sequence of the packin, and the warm glowy feeling of having accomplished something for your fellow man. Not to mention living on in infamy once v3 develops sentience and starts killing off humanity! :D

There will also be further reward to those who contribute frequently, and it may or may not involve the sequel to this packin. Okay, well, it probably does.

Here's a list of 'Races' that it'd be good to fill up. I won't cry if we get multiple good-looking sprites of the same race, and it's a far hope that we'd fill all of the roles, but it'd be neat if you guys did!

The list:

  • Humanoids: Human, Android, Kobold, Goblin, Orc, Ogre, Troll, Cyclops, Dryad, Harpy, Succubus
  • Beasts: Jackal, Snowwolf, Hellhound
  • Winged Beasts: Gryphon, Manticore, Chimera
  • Birds: Vulture, Cockatrice, Phoenix
  • Insects: Wasp, Hornet, Dragonfly
  • Slimey things: Slime, Amoeba, Jelly
  • Snakey things: Viper, Python, Cobra
  • Wormy things: Leech, Sandworm, Lamprey
  • Lizardy things: Salamander, Basilisk, Naga,Wyrm,Wyvern,Leviathan
  • Spidery things: Blackwidow, Tarantula, Antlion
  • Plants: Snapdragon, Flytrap, Lotus, Treant, Myconid, Cactus
  • Seafood: Octopod, Squid, Kraken
  • Animate Objects: Golem, Armor, Crystal
  • Evil/undead: Zombie, Skeleton, Mummy, Revenant, Vampire, Lich, Poltergeist, Specter, Wraith, Imp, Gargoyle, Belial, Djinni, Efreet, Shade,
  • Robots/Machines: SentryBot, SWATBot, WarBot, RadarWing, RepairWing, LaserWing, WelderPod, VulcanPod, MissilePod

Notes about this list:
The racial type at the front is just to give you a clue as to what type of beasty this is (if the name itself didn't help at all). Each different race-name is to be a distinct and seperate sprite, that once recolored many times becomes the palette-swapped armada of creatures everyone loves to beat up.

Existing Reference

It's recommended you reference The Sully Chronicles and Hahn's battle demo for look'n'feel ideas.

However, if you're lazy, here's some pre-ripped for you.

PLEASE NOTE: These are not in the frame-order I'd like. click here for a silly lesson in how to order the frames Also note that when showing off your sprites, they don't need to be in filmstrip format... just when you're emailing them to me. ;)

Overkill

Squid-things sound easy enough to create. Sure thing! I would draw human-types, but my style probably wouldn't match that of the other artwork.

Unless... Has the pack-in art been updated?

mcgrue

No, the packin art hasn't been updated. Although there is the sequel to the packin which'll come out afterwards, which has some pretty durn awesome art.

Anyways:
Link to the instructions on how to order your finished filmstrip animations.

Yes, the tutorial is deranged. I'm sorry. ;)

Now THIS is community involvement! Brilliant Grue!! :D I've wanted to suggest this many times, but I didn't think you guys would listen ^_^;; The Verge Community would be most willing to contribute, I'm sure :D..

What about me? er. hm.. Gotta go, great idea! :D

mcgrue

What was that, arias? Put you down for 3 enemies? gotcha.

arias

I think you've done it again Grue.

It's "INanimate", isn't it?

You need sleep. :D Plus, what's the color pallete?

mcgrue

No... Inanimate objects would not be very good enemies. These are animated objects.

arias

...... o_o.. These are animated, *inanimate* objects, aren't they? :P Oh wait. Hmm.. I'm right but you're right too.

Gyyaah.

At any rate, go draw some sprites! I know you have the magical power to, artist-boy! >:D

GRUE:

On the subject of:
" ... (IE, cartoony and simplistic, black outlines, etc..)... "

Well I made a hellhound sprite. (Or at least the way I think of a hell hound.) Is this the style you meant by the above quote, or do you think the sprites should be more detailed?

FRAMES:
0-1 Normal Idle
2-3 Weak Idle
4-5 attack
6 hit
7 dead

Yeah, those look about right to match the game. Tricky thing about animation is that you really need to see it in action to judge if it's good or not. I'll make a little animation-tester demo soonish towards this end.

Looks to be a good base. And dogs tend to be hard!

Edit: Dude, your geocities account sucks. I edited out your broken link, and since the link was correct but wouldn't show the image (probably an offsite linking ban), I blew it up 2x size and hosted it here.

But you can always just upload your imagefile to the filesystem, which is what zonker did. Check out his Cyclops-in-progress!

Good work so far guys.

Now now, kids... there's plenty of room for mulitple mushrooms in the system!

above = me, hence the "- Creft" ;)

[edit: Yes, I know my geocities account sucks. :P The "bigger" link probably will not work.]

[editors note: Fixed it Grue, put a new version with all ten frames looping. purty! Still debating whether or not I should recolor them too.]
